What are the best islands for snorkeling...out of hurricane belt?

I've just started thinking about a vacation without our 2 kids, but we will have to go in early October, so I'm concerned about the weather. We love to snorkel, but don't dive. We will only be able to go for 4 or 5 days from Ohio, so easy air transfers would be nice. Also, casinos would be a bonus, but not necessary. Not interested in all-inclusive, but would like a nice resort. We've been to Bahama's, on a tight budget 1996 and Gr Cayman 2001.

Thank you for any information and advice.

The only islands with a very low risk of hurricane exposure are the ABC's, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao (though they still have a history of infrequent hurricane and major storm exposure). Trinidad is next lowest on the list.

Of the islands above, Aruba best fits your overall requirements.

I agree with Aruba! Plenty to do for everyone and weather will not be a problem

The further south you go, the less chance of a direct hit by a hurricane but no place is immune and might even suffer ill effects from hurricanes in other parts of the Caribbean - rain, rough surf, etc. Aruba is not your best bet for the snorkeling you are looking for but it would have the casinos that you mentioned. There are no guarantees in October and I've tranveled to many different islands at that time and managed to avoid problems - just lucky, I guess. Make sure you do protect your trip with some travel insurance at that time of the year.

Of the ABC islands (which I think are the safest bet that time of year) - I would pick either Curacao (great diving, snorkeling, some small casinos) or Bonaire - amazing diving/snorkeling - pretty much all that goes on there. Aruba was nice - but weather was windier there than the other 2 islands....

As previously stated, the answer to your search is BONAIRE. Plenty of great snorkelling from beach access. And out of the hurricane belt. Curacao is very nice as well but the snorkelling a bit less spectacular
