wedding in PSV

Has anyone gotten married in PSV? If you have was it complicated. Plus what about flying there? Is it expensive to get there? We are planning to go in July '04.

I can't give you any info about getting married at PSV but was there a few years ago and can offer some insight into the resort itself.

You cannot fly directly to PSV. It is reachable only by boat. Assuming you are comming from the US, the easiest way is is to fly into Barbados and take an island hopper to Union Island. From there the resort will send it's launch to pick you up for the 30 to 40 minute boat ride to PSV.

Do your research before you make your decision about going to PSV. You may get a lot of mixed reviews about the resort. My wife and I were disappointed. The island is drop dead gorgeous and the concept interesting but we found the overall experience lacking. The accomodations are comfortable but a little rustic. We found the staff not very friendly or helpful. This attitude seemed to reflect the owner's lack of interest in the guests. During our entire stay neither the owners or the staff ever seemed to acknowledge or recognize us with a friendly greeting. To be fair, the owners hosted a "manager's cocktail party" one night for all of the guests -everyone seemed to have a good time but that was the only time we ever got more than a passing "grunt" when we saw them. The food was average at best. The dinner menu descriptions changed daily but the selections were always the same - Rack of Lamb on Monday, Lamb Chops on Tuesday, Medallions of Lamb on Wednesday - you get my drift. The food was served luke warm, and tasted as if it was cooked at 5:00 and held under a heating lamp until it was served at 7:30 or 8:00. The beaches are picturesque but there are massive amounts of coral and rocks all along the shore so there are only a few places with sandy bottoms where you can enter the water and swim. The flag system works best in the "do not disturb" mode (red flag). Hoisting the yellow flag for room service or a jitney ride translates to a long wait.

We've been to almost every upscale resort in the Caribbean (we especially like the smaller intimate ones) and we've been repeat guests at many of them but we won't go back to PSV. In our opinion there are many, many more places that are so much better. This is just our opinion, while we were at PSV we met a couple that had been there 7 times and they could stop raving about how wonderful it was. We couldn't understand what the attraction for them was.

Sunnyboy: I was intrigued to read your comments about PSV--it's a place that's been on my short list of places to vacation since I first heard about it last year. What other places would you recommend in its stead? Like you, I prefer the "smaller, more intimate ones". Every couple of years my partner and I splurge on a vacation and the years in between we're a bit more budget-oriented, so I'd be glad to know your recs in both categories. Thanks!

It's always difficult to define "smaller and intimate" because some larger reorts can give you that same feeling if the are properly laid out or you visit them in the off-season when they are less crowded. That said, check out the following to see if any appeal to you (listed in no particular order - some you are probably faimilar with):

Peter Island, BVI
Biras Creek and Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda
Nisbet Plantation Beach Resort and Montpelier Plantation, Nevis
Cotton House and Firefly, Mustique
Carenage Bay, Canouan (Grenadines)
Palm Island (Grenadines)
K-Club, Barbuda
Cape Santa Maria and Stella Maris, Long Island (Bahamas)
Jumby Bay,Curtain Bluffs and Galley Bay, Antigua
Cap Julca, Anguilla
Anse Chastanet, St. Lucia
Parrot Cay, Turks & Caicos
Cayo Esparanto, Ambergris Caye (Belize)

Also, consider renting a luxury villa on the island of your choice. You'd be surprised at how intimate staying in one of them can be. The cost is comparable to most resorts.

That's just a few hints for starters. Good luck finding "your place".

Sunnyboy: out of Peter island, Virgin Gourda or Galley, which would you pick? we are very interested in snorkleing and possibly diving, beaches are important too, nightlife doesn't really matter.

let me jump in here if I may,,,just returned from Palm Island,,and Witnessed 2 weddings..( you can see PSV from Palm its that close),,in order to get married you (the resort will set this up)will have to take one day to fly back to St.Vincent to get registered, cant register on palm or psv or any other...the weddings we saw were very nice,,the only comment is dont get the photographer,,,have another guest take some with your cameras or video,,,you only get 36 pics and it was about $350us...and we saw the quality,,not great,,save your money that way and spend it enjoying the island and we had great food on Palm,,,cant speak about PSV didnt get there....hope that helps

Answer to lemurs2 - If snorkeling, diving and beaches are your priority the answer is a no brainer - the BVI's beat Antigua hands down. There are hundreds of dive and snorkle site throughout the island chain, all within relatively easy reach of each other. As to which of the three resorts I mention is better, that is a matter of personal taste since they are fairly comparable in the type of accomodations, attentivness, food, service and facilities. You can check out the various web-sites for specifice details. Perhaps this will help in your decision:

Peter Island Resort is a private island resort and accessable only by boat. If memory serves me correct there are 3 very nice palm tree lined beaches. They are uncrowded since guests are the only ones on the island. There is some good snorkling directly "off the beaches" but you will have to take day trips to the better "off island sites". The hotel can arrange for dive trips, day sails and off-site snorkle trips.

Biras Creek is at the north end (I think I have my directions straight) of Virgin Gorda. Even though it is "on VG" it is accessable only by boat as there are no roads leading from the main part of the island. They have a very nice beach which is on the Atlantic side so there is more wave action (not really objectionable). The hotel will gladly assist in setting up day trips for off-site snorkling and diving.

Little Dix Bay is on the main part of VG. It has it's own lovely beach with limited snorkling but there are 7 or 8 other beaches within 5 or 10 minute drive which have excellent "walk-in" snorkling (including the Baths, Spring Bay, Savanah Bay, etc). Like the other two reorts the hotel can set up day trips to neighboring islands for fantastic snorkling and diving.

Of the three my favorite is LDB. Hope this helps.

Sunnyboy: Thanks for the list. Most of those are already on my must-see vacation list, except for Peter Island, which for some reason doesn't interest me as much as the others, and the resorts on Long Island, which I had never heard of.

Lemurs2: It sounds like you are considering many of the same islands/resorts that Scubamom and her daughter have already reviewed online, with extensive text and lots of photos. There's even a section where she makes direct comparisons among Peter Island, Guana Island, and either Biras or Little Dix--rates them against each other for scuba, snorkel, food, atmosphere, romance, privacy, etc. I'd recommend that you read what they have to say about them: www.scubamom.com and www.scubatreks.com

I spent my honeymoon at Guana Island in the BVI and if you'd like a place that offers tons of untouched, natural beauty with tons of hiking and watersports a-plenty, along with a rustic-but-elegant atmosphere, I don't think you could find better. Because of its "self-serve" atmosphere when it comes to making your own drinks, hiking all over, or using their non-motorised water sports, it combines the best of a private villa vacation with the more traditional luxuries of having a resort staff. Whatever you decide, have a fabulous wedding & honeymoon!

Sunnyboy, those are great comments. I loved the Firefly on Mustique and assumed that PSV would be just as good even better because of the luxury. Maybe I will think of something else for next time.

Sorry - I haven't been to Roatan. For some reason that destination doesn't appeal to me.
