Villa on St. John USVI or Royal Caribbean cruise of Southern Caribbean?

I know this sounds like a strange question, but has anyone rented a villa on St. John and been on a Royal Caribbean cruise? What would be the pros and cons of each of these types of vacations? Which type of vacation was more relaxing? Was it nicer to eat on the ship or going out to restaurants on St. John? Was the pool more enjoyable on the ship or your private pool on St. John?

Hello mjlefeuv,- crow island again!
Its funny you ask this question. I have been on 6 cruises, one with Royal Caribbean. Hubby and I loved the southern route the best and that particular cruise line. Whenever we stopped in St. Thomas we would take the day trip to ST. John. Every time we had to leave to go back to the ship, I would feel so heartbroken. But, we kept booking cruises because we loved the pampering and activities to keep us occupied. We loved booking a room with a balcony and watching the islands go by and listening to the ocean roar. We loved waking up everday to a new adventure. My favorite thing had to be eating at the reaturants and never worrying about the bill. What we didn't like about cruising- embarkation and debarkation, crowds all of the time, being herded around like cattle, waiting in line for everything, and trying to find 2 empty lounge chaises next to eachother on deck. Over the years these thing began to bother us more & more. On our very last cruise we went on we stopped in ST. Thomas and took our ususal day trip to ST.John. When it was time to leave, I was in tears (hubby looked close to tears) trying to find a logical way to get our luggage, ditch the boat, and stay on St. John. We finished out the rest of the week on the ship but have changed our annual vacation to renting a villa on ST.John. To answer your questions: renting a villa IMHO is much more relaxing than taking a cruise. The one thing I sometimes miss is eating at nice restaurants on the ship without having to pay. However, after having mussels at the Fish Trap & Lobster and The Lime Inn, we were in heaven. Not sure if you have ever been on a cruise, but the pool area IS NOT relaxing. It is loud and crowded. Trying to find a vacant spot in the pool is tough. We laugh at some of the cruise commercials because they are inaccurate. I have never seen less than 10-20 people in the pool at a time. And the pools are very small. That said, the above is just my opinion. I hope it will help one way or another.

IMHO it's a no-brainer. I'd do the villa on St. Johns over a cruise (no mater what cruiseline) at the drop of a hat.

Thanks for your help. I will try and promote the villa rental on St. John with my husband and our friends. It sounds like more my type of vacation (hopefully theirs also)
