Vieques,PR--anybody been there?

Wondering what it is like? Heard it's still relatively unknown, but is charming.

Vieques and it companion Culebra are not what many would call resort islands based on the class of accomodations expected by many on the forum. However they are an honest representation of what a small island is like in this area of the Caribbean. Both are somewhat arid so the growth is not lush but there is a lot of natural beauty going for each in their own ways. The best beaches on Vieques are controlled by the US military but you can go to them with identification when they are not using the rest of the island for practice. Culebra does not have this problem and it has one of the top beaches in the world. Both places are friendly, modest and good values. It is where may people from the large Island go for vacations since they can afford the prices. No, they are not unknown. They have not been promoted since there are no major resort interests there. It is the type of island where the old time Rock Resort would put a place to stay. We have been to both islands perhaps 6 years ago.

Just there & have topped my trip report for you. It's very quiet and low-key. The biobay is awesome and the beaches are very uncrowded. If we had it to do over, I think our family would have stayed the week in Vieques rather than spending time in San Juan.

hi there! i am going to vieques for the first time in june and i'm psyched! i was worried about the water and the bombing but i kept hearing that there is nothing to worry about. my only question is...are the beaches really clean and calm or are they rocky?? every time i look at pictures, the beach do not seem like those in culebra (as an example). now, we have chosen vieques over culebra b/c we like the resort type feel and want to stay at the new wyndham. thing is, we don't want to compromise beach time--should we rethink the trip based on these concerns?? thanks.

i have a reservation at the new Wyndham with a beachfront suite. we have done quite a bit of reserch. it appears to be very quiet. we are taking our 19 and 15 year olds for a week of water sports and doing very little. the military will be completely out as of may 1. there are many good websites on the island. we even found one with restaurants(with menus). we love to go to islands with very little developement.please post a trip report when you return. thanks!

Been to Vieques and loved it! The only rocky beach we found was I think called Angel Beach which is totally unknown and undiscovered, and where only a local told us the name of it. The rocky part about it is getting to the beaches. It is a once in a lifetime experience where one would have to drive to the beaches to get there and it sure is an exploring adventure. It totally defines "discovering a beach of your own." Advice: get a 4x4 jeep, suzuki type vehicle to discover the great beaches. Our favorite is Navio beach...by far the best of what we've seen. Sun Bay is nice but Navio is crowdless and pure white sand!
