My husband and I will be staying all inclusive in Varadero in October, but would like to visit Havana for 1 or 2 nights. Is it easy to travel on public transport to Havana and then book Accommodation there? The (UK) tour companies 'organised' trips seem expensive and not very interesting.

We just got back from 1 week all-inclusive in Varadero and it was great!
No, it is not easy to travel by public transport. I have never seen so many hitchhikers in my life. Buses seem infrequent and not overly reliable. The day tour from Varadero to Havana is $63usd so we opted to rent a car which as not a cheap alternative at $105usd (brand new car with a/c,includes full tank of gas and insurance). Gas is very expensive there. Havana is definitely worth a visit. I have heard that if you can get set up with someone from your hotel who knows a friend or relative that can take you around, it might be the cheapest and best way to see Havana. It was offered to us at $100 for 4 people. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out. With a guided tour, you get shown all the touristy places. On your own, definitely study up on places you want to visit and just go with the flow.
