USVI's in October... are they too risky?
We have a trip in the planning stages for St. John, October 16-23, should we be very concerned about hurricanes? It's the only time we have for a vacation, and we're thinking about renting a villa. Has anyone weathered a storm on the islands? <BR> <BR>Thanks for your help

Ditto. I guess the chances are relatively small, but in my own case, I know I'd worry about it right up until it is time to leave for St. John. At least weather forecasting is good enough, and hurricanes move slow enough that for the week you have in mind you may know before you leave the States whether your chances of a hurricane are zero, maybe, or likely. I base that estimate/opinion on 9 years at sea.

Nicole: My husband and I were scheduled for St. John the first week of October last year and the timing couldn't have been worse. The hurricane skirted the island and we watched our weather channel hourly so finally made the decision to cancel. We were lucky and able to re-booked two weeks later. Loved the island and in October, you do have a little more opportunities should rebooking have to take place since it's not in-season, not to mention the great off-season prices! We're headed to Grenada this year...further south but will probably continue to test mother nature in the Caribbean in October! Can't beat the $$$ and the uncrowded bliss!

Nicole,traditionally if any hurricanes come from mid Oct. they generally happen in the western Caribbean, near Cuba. There's a less than 10% chance of it being in that area. However, your best bet is Aruba. It's outside the hurricane belt, and it enjoys a year round warm, dry, and sunny climate between 88 and 75 degrees. I've been filming in the Caribbean for 35 years, I should know.
