We will be heading to Provo in a few days and I have noted that there is a lot of talk of how there really isn't much shopping to be had there, and that is fine.
I have also read that conch jewelry is something people buy. My questions are: what local arts and crafts are available
where does one go to find them
what is something nice to take home as a souvenir for others [ie grand cayman is rum cake for us].
I can't wait to get there. Bring on the sun!

I found prices to be pretty expensive in T & C. Remember most souvenirs are imported from somewhere else. T-shirts were close to $25. There is not much local industry. I would think local shells would be fairly reasonable though.
i don't know anything about conch jewelry but i have looked at conch pearls and pieces made with them. they are available at the conch farm and at the jeweler on leeward.
one island specialty if you can call it that, is conch bowls. a shell on little shell legs. i keep some sand from taylor bay beach (softest on island)in mine. i've also brought home a painting that i found in a small mall on leeward. as you drive around there are a couple places by the road that folks have their arts/crafts displayed most days. can't recall exactly where they were, but you will see them out and about.
Thank you both. Hubby always gets a t-shirt wherever we go...Sharkbites was recommended for that, and he likes the ones he saw on line.
I like to get something with local flavor wherever we go. Thanks for the tips. I'll be looking for some different and interesting things.
As I recall on the beach they sell huge conch shells. They were $5.00. YOu can fimd Tee shirts not a problem.
We got some of the colorful Haitian art made out of recycled metal drums. They are quite colorful. There is an art gallery next to Ports Of Call that has a lot of nice artwork..can't recall the name, but it is in the same shopping center as the Cuban Cigar store. Actually that same art gallery has a store at the airport while you are waiting for your flight back home.
There is also a local craft place on one of the major roads that sells these. Here's a photo

Handwoven baskets from Middle Caicos can be purchased as well. I actually found them at the mini-mart at Ports of Call.
Sharkbite t-shirts are cool. So are the t-shirts from Dive Provo, and Hemmingways at the Sands. Reef Peepers has cool shirts.
I'm so jealous! Enjoy your vacation!!
Kris
the photolink mymoosie provides is of one of the road side craft places i mentioned.
Thank you all very much, it is just the information I was looking for.
I have collected things from our travels for a lot of years, and just wanted something besides a t-shirt for myself [hey, I may get one of those as well]. I will absolutely be looking for the craft place.
You guys are great.
And we're off! Heading out the door to the airport.
Want to thank any of you who have helped with suggestions, comments or direction. Its been invaluable.
I'll post a trip report upon our return.
Sunshine, sand, beautiful water, and relaxation...here we come!
