trip to puerto rico/ using publicos

Hi, I'm planning a solo trip to Puerto Rico in a couple of weeks. I'm 24/ F... I was wondering if it would be safe for me to use the publicos and to travel around via them? (yes, I know it would be cheaper to rent a car etc. but I don't drive). Any tips ? Is it safe in general for a women traveling alone? And lastly, any ideas for cafes or places I can meet other travellers?
