Does anybody know where it is better to stay in Cancun : near Club Med or near the Omni hotel?(beach, activities etc)
We also would like to take a side trip to Tikal (guatemala). Can anyone recommend a travel agency ot tour operator to visit the site?

Omni is in a better location. Club Med is all the way at the bottom of the "7" (hotel zone is in the shape of a 7). So you won't be close to anything - except maybe the airport. Both sit on great areas of beach. I used to stay at the Westin which is right next to Club Med but ended up changing to the Sheraton due to the location (it was right across from La Isla Mall) among other things. It was centrally located.
However, Cancun has buses that run up and down the hotel zone/downtown 24/7 so no matter where you stay you'll be able to get anywhere within a pretty good timeframe. I always hear good things about the Omni - people alway talking about the jacuzzi bar.
You may want to try visiting the below listed website. It has a vwey good Message Board to ask questions. Most people are Cancun vets on there.

I have stayed at both properties (Club Med twice and Omni once). Both hotels are older, and cannot compete with the newer more upscale hotels. Both offer decent accommodations for a reasonable price. But Club Med's grounds are gorgeous and extensive and, in my opinion, give it a significant edge. The view of Cancun from the registration area is beautiful. The Omni is a high rise hotel while the Club Med has low lying buildings spread out around its property. It also has a lot more beach front than the Omni, and there are areas with very calm water. The water in front of the Omni was rough the entire 10 days of my last visit to Cancun. Club Med used to offer a side trip to Tikal, but it depends on the time of year you'll be traveling there as to whether it can be done in one day. The last time I was there, I learned that, during certain "slow" times, there is only one flight down per day and requires an overnight.
