Trinidad or Tobago?

Hi, I'm interested in visiting one of these islands in the fall, maybe around December. I noticed that Trinidad has 1 or 2 nature preserves, which would be nice since I love nature. But I see that Tobago has 3 or 4 preserves.

If you've been to both of these islands, which do you like better and why?

Also, where do people go to see the Steel Drum bands playing?

Thanks, Greg

I've been to Tobago only, Trinidad is not somewhere many tourists go as far as I know. Tobago has quite a hilly interior with some lovely beaches eg Englishman's Bay, it is a beautiful island. You can see the Steel Drums at Sunday School, Bucco, on Sunday evenings. There are several street food stalls as well.

Thanks for the reply. After doing some more searching on this forum, I started to consider maybe going to Grenada instead.

I don't really do well with a lot of hills, so maybe Tobago will have to wait. Grenada looks great with all of the fruit and spice trees and beautiful beaches. Think I'm gonna research that for now. Greg

Tobago is not hilly all over so please don't dismiss it on that account. Where most of the hotels are located its flat. It's only when you go to the reserves or on an excursion that you will see the hilly interior.
Grenada is also gorgeous.

Tobago is the most relaxing place I've ever been. It is where people from Trinidad go for vacation, not to mention lots and lots of Brits. Amazing beaches and good food and cheap beer and rum (expensive wine, though). Exceptional scuba diving, as well.

That's true, Tobago is a beautiful island and has some great diving spots, you can find all the info you need here http://visittobago.gov.tt/activities/diving in case you plan to go diving (and I think anyone who visits Tobago must, it's a breathtaking experience. Trinidad is more industrial and is the most populous city out of the 23 islands which together form the island country Trinidad & Tobago. Tobago is more tourist oriented, it has beautiful beaches and ample of activities for you to enjoy.

Hi, trini here. Tobago is much more touristy and very laid back- definitely more of an island vibe. It's not all hilly, so gonna agree with Greg about dismissing it because of that. Unfortunately I haven't been to any of the nature reserves.

Trinidad is more business oriented, but there are many nature reserves- Asa wright nature center, caroni bird sanctuary, the pitch lake. There are also leatherback turtles around May-August, but I see that you want to go in December.

As for steel drums, December is only 2 months before carnival so you will definitely be able to catch some performances. You will also maybe be interested in parang, which is played around Christmas time.

Trinidad also has better food options (more culturally diverse than Tobago) and a lot more nightlife.
