My husband and I are considering a trip to Cuba in April and are wondering about the Brisas Trinidad del Mar All Inclusive hotel. Would appreciate any input about this hotel as well as input re ideas of things to do while we are there. We enjoy the beach, snorkelling and hiking as well as visiting the city of Trinidad. Any suggestions re tours or hiring guides to go into the mountains? Thankyou.

We hiked just up the hill to the Radio Transmitter (up Cerro de la Vigia) to see nice views of Trinidad. Less than 30 min hike. There are hikes up to 16km (to El Cubano) but didn't look into it as didn't have to time to do that kind of hikes on this trip. When you get there check with the Cubatur office in town.
Please bring along pencils to give to the kids/parents of kids as they seem to need it and are in short supply of it.

Ok, Trinidad Cuba is an amazing place to explore. To start you off, here is an on-screen slideshow of images I took when I was there.

Now, one place that I suggest you try to get to is El Nicho, a nice waterfall in a National Park. You'll need to either take a tour or hire a cab/driver for the day to get out there. Negotiate the fee in ADVANCE of taking the cab and be sure to ask if his fee includes admission to the park.

To help you get oriented, here is the tourist map of Trinidad. It's posted in display cases throughout the town so you'll never get lost. One important place to note is Plaza Mayor. Standing in the plaza, look at the church on the upper side (#57 on map). To the right of the church is a huge set of stairs leading up to the Casa de la Musica. In the evenings (most I think) there is a live concert (free) about 1/2 way up. There's also bars to buy drinks and you can listen/dance the night away with a mixture of locals and tourists who overnight in Trinidad. It's magical and something the bus loads of day-trippers never get to experience.

Also, a very nice day-trip is to the Valley de los Ingenios which is a UNESCO world heritage site (as is Trinidad itself). Very picturesque and gives you a good history of tobacco, slavery, etc, in the Americas 400 years ago.
This should give you a good start. Oh, and final tip. Wear GOOD shoes/hiking boots while exploring the old town part of Trinidad. The streets are wonderfully cobbled, but the cobbles can be hard on feet and ankles. A twisted ankle is not what you need.
enjoy and have a great trip.
