Transportation Santo Domingo Punta Cana and Club Med

We are considering staying with my husband and 3 children at the Club Med in Punta Cana. Any feedback on this property?

Also, we are trying to fly with frequent flyer miles and only Santo Domingo is available. How far is it from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana and what transportation options do we have if we do not want to rent a car? Cost?

Thanks,

Claudina

Driving from S.D. to Punta Cana IS NOT recommended you would have to stop overnight first or fly to the Punta Cana Airport.. it's much too far and dangerous.

I driven around the world, and speak Spanish, I personally would not drive it. Those roads, and especially the drivers, are manic!!!

To get a taxi is probably around $200.

Are there other places you could fly too?

DR is a great "package" destination, so when you pay for hotel without paying flights, you're not saving that much-I would use points for a much higher price air.

The drive from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana is about 3 or 3-1/2 hours. Many tours from Punta Cana do SD as a day-trip, so the idea that it's not possible or too dangerous is simply ridiculous. It would work if your flight came in by noon.

However, I agree with blamona that I wouldn't want to drive this myself, though you certainly could (but the cost of a week-long car rental in the DR is pretty high). A taxi would be best.

However, I'd strongly ... STRONGLY urge you not to do this. With so many kids, this is going to be a miserable transfer for you, and because you have to check in for your return flight so early, you'll have to leave your resort at least 6 or 7 hours before your flight. So if your return is before noon, then you're talking about leaving at 5 or 6 am.

I think blamona is about right on the cost. Count on at least $200 or $250 each way for the transfer (by the van, not by the person). You might try calling Tecni-Taxi, which is based in SD at 809/567-2010 or 809/566--7272. This is a reliable radio taxi company, and they may have a standard fee for this route. You may get only a Spanish speaker, however.

But Club Med may offer some kind of transfer option, which you should also look into. Additionally, Club Med has rates that include airfare that are usually pretty good and would be worth looking into. It's infinitely better to fly into Punta Cana airport, which is about 15 minutes from the resort.
