Transportation from the San Juan, Puerto Rico airport to Guanica, PR
We've found a great last-minute travel package for the Copamarina Beach Resort in Puerto Rico at the end of the month, but we're concerned about a transportation issue. What would be the best and most inexpensive way to get from the San Juan airport to Guanica (on the southwest coast) and how much does it cost? I read a review in which someone stated that it was "an easy and safe two-hour drive," but he didn't say whether he drove himself or if he hired transportation. We don't want to get a rental car as we certainly won't need one once we get to the Copamarina. Please keep in mind that we'd be flying into the SJ airport at around 10pm on a weeknight. Thank you!

We were at the Copamarina less than 2 weeks ago; we too landed in the evening and chose to stay at an airport hotel for the nite - the Marriott Courtyard which is parallel to the runway. A nice property, but definite airplane noise. Taxi cost $12.00.
The next AM - picked up rental car back at the airport ($32.95/day for a new, small size 4 person car) for the 2 hour easy drive.
Along Hwy 2, after Ponce, before Guanica, we stopped at a food store (in Guayanilla?) for room snacks & soda. We were also able to purchase beer/wine there - which was nice to chill in the room refrigerator and partake on our garden level patio.
For the most part the rental car stayed parked; we did take a short drive to check out Mary Lee's By the Sea and some of the local sandy beaches.
The drive back to San Juan on a Friday afternoon with Much traffic took over 3 hrs.

Definately rent a car for the least expensive and most flexible way to get around in PR. I strongly recommend you stay in San Juan for the night before going to Guanica. While the roads are safe, the exits can be confusing. GET A GOOD MAP! We just returned from PR 2 weeks ago but did not go to Guanica this time. We did go 3 years ago. We drove on the same roads this time that we did last time. Traffic from San Juan to Caguas can be heavy but from Caguas around to Ponce is not too bad and the roads are good. Make sure you know what the road signs mean. Get a list of Puerto Rican road signs off the internet or from your car rental place.
If you have time, consider driving to some places around Guanica. Mayaguez is near as is an excellent wildlife refuge in the Boqueron area.Remember PR is not large and it does not take too long to drive to many places from the Guanica area. You will love PR.
