Transportation from St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda, then to St. John
Lots of travel questions regarding travel between the U.S.VI and BVI. We are planning a 7 night trip for July. We would like to split our time between Virgin Gorda and St. John. We will be flying into St. Thomas - arriving at 4:30 pm - and are confused as to the easiest way to get to Virgin Gorda. Would you recommend a flight or a ferry? If by ferry, do they run in the evening? Where can I find ferry schedules?
Are there regular ferries between Virgin Gorda and St. John throughout the week?
Lastly, our flight home leaves St. Thomas at 6:30 am. Is it possible to get to the airport that day from St. John or will we have to arrive in St. Thomas the night before? Thanks!

the ferry schedules are posted at vinow.com. A direct ferry leaves Red Hook, St. Thomas, on Thursday & Sunday at 8:00 am and from Charlotte Amalie Tuesday & Thursday
8:45 am and 5 pm and Saturday at 3:30 pm. You would not be able to make a 5pm ferry if your flight lands at 4:30. People do stay overnite in STT and catch the early ferry unless they ferry to Tortola and then on to Virgin Gorda. Planes do not land on Virgin Gorda after dark but if you are flying thru SanJuan you could switch to AirSunshine that will fly directly into Virgin Gorda. American Eagle flys from SJU to Tortola as an alternate.
You might make arrangements with a private water taxi but you will not be able to use the public ferry between St. John and St. Thomas for your flight home. Again, some choose to overnite it on St. Thomas for such an early flight.
By chance are you splitting your time between Little Dix and Caneel?

Neetse,
I'd recommend taking the ferry over Air Sunshine. We had a really bad experience both ways with Air Sunshine. Enjoy VG and St. John-they're both beautiful islands! Be sure to visit the Baths too-get there early (before 9am) to beat the crowds.

Easy ferries to St. John. There is a ferry schedule posted at www.stjohntravelforum.com. Loads of other St. John info there as well. Gorda to St. John is not a regular trip. Gorda to West End Tortola, and then West End to St. John.
Or you can get on one of the tourist day charter boats, but they start on St. John and go round trip to take people to the Baths, etc., and then back to St. John.

When we have an early flight from St. John, we stay at one of the hotels near the airport on St. Thomas. Easy to do. Several of them right there.
No way to get from St. John to St. Thomas that early.
Just overnight on St. Thomas.

I am planning the same style trip and would love to know what ended up working for you?
I am planning on visiting Caneel Bay a few days the little dix.
Would it be best to fly into and out of Tortola or St. Thomas?
Thanks!

SarahRae, why not do an open jaw ticket? Fly into Tortola and out of St. Thomas, or vice versa, depending on which resort you end your trip on. The difference in airfare is usually negligble in a situation like that.

We are doing this exact thing at the beginning of June. We are spending Monday night on STT and taking the Tuesday morning ferry to VG. We spend 5 nights on VG then take the Sunday afternoon ferry to STJ, spend a week there then ferry back to STT and spend the last night there before flying out the next day.
Sounds like a lot of work but hopefully it will all work out very well. We don't mind the ferry rides.

Neetse, I tend to agree that you will have to spend two nights on St. Thomas. One the day you arrive & the other the night before you leave. What airline are you flying? I've never seen a flight leaving at 6:30 then again I usually take US Air, Delta of AA.
Caneel & Little Dix has an Island Hopper Package you might want to look into. Do visit the Baths they are impressive.
