Very sad to read that info, as this island is very "safe".

Last week it was the girl informing us about some other Island and no one believed her. I wonder if that was true? I guess we will never know.At least this is backed up with some truth. They are all "safe" till something happens.

Most Caribbean islands are still safer than major US cities...

I have to agree with Saftey. I listen to the news at night and shudder to think how not even the innocent children are safe in their homes in America anymore. I agree that crime is an issue in the islands - some islands moreso than others - with regard to Anguilla, this is most certainly an isolated incident which will have everyone, especially the locals in shock and I am sure the authorities will do all in their power to get to the bottom of it and to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, please do not let this deter you from coming to visit and to enjoy Anguilla and the other islands of the Caribbean.

safety-
There are millions of people in any major US city - does not compare to the small populations on most islands. Have you ever heard of the "law of averages" or are you just as stupid as you sound.

No place in the world is immune to crime. And this is a perfect example of it. Crime in most caribbean islands is very low, due to the tourism factor. But, sadly, murders can happen anywhere. It will still not deter me from going to Anguilla as I believe the last murder was in the '80's, and is still very safe. Maybe Anguilla is so safe that they are just not prepared to prevent (security wise) for such a tragic event.

I feel very sorry for the families.

Jodi,

Yes, I have heard of the "law of averages" and restate my claim that most caribbean islands are still safer the major US cities. Look at the figures on (10) major metropolitan areas and compare to Caribbean...

Try not to speak so strongly when you don't know what you are talking about. Your (slightly emotional) post was based on ignorance and hear-say.

The murder of a tourist will undoubtedly bring out emotional responses from everyone. This is just a reminder that even in the 'safe' Caribbean, tourists should take the same precautions they would take at home or when traveling to other areas.

In the Conde Nast Traveler magazine there was an article about safety in the Caribbean -- it said when renting a private villa you should inquire about security, and if there isn't any you should consider hiring your own. That's a potential advantage of staying in a resort with security personnel and other people around -- instead of a villa where you are alone and vulnerable.

It has not been established how the American woman died so it has not been ruled a "murder". Robbery was in the Cul de Sac area which has had theft problems in the past.

The autopsy has been completed and cause of death was strangulation. There is also evidence of sexual involvement, police have taken samples for DNA testing.

Hope they find the guy(s) involved.

Unfortunately you can confirm that is was murder on Anguilla News:

www.anguillanews.com/Anguillanews/Anguillanews_5.html

It was a brutal crime - in addition to strangulation there was evidence of sexual tampering and other physical injuries to this 62 year old American tourist whose body was found on the beach.

Yes, Anguillanews has reported that the woman was strangled and that there's evidence of sexual 'tampering'. The weird thing is that the pathologist (an American) is called Stephen King.

the wierd thing is that there is a need for a pathologist and that violence is proliferating everywhere.
