The Crane?

The reviews of The Crane Hotel mention the renovations. Is there anyone that has been there as recent as Feb/March 2005? Is the construction still going on? How BAD is it? How can it be avoided while still staying there?
Thanks Emily and Winston

It was still going on as of Jan.

If they are still offering vastly reduced rates due to the construction, I would think that would answer your question about whether or not it can be avoided...

Are you aware that The Crane is in just about the most remote location in Barbados? And while on a beautiful beach, the water can be very rough at times, and no snorkeling.

We didn't stay at the Crane, but we did walk around the hotel a bit when we were in Barbados last week. (March 8 -13) There was tons of construction going on outside the hotel, including a massive landscaping project. However, I can't say how distracting it was to the guests. I suppose if they limit it to certain times of day, it's not that big of a deal.

We just returned from a short pre-cruise stay at the Crane. There is still major construction going on at the new pools in front of the newer buildings. We were told it should be done in about three more months. Based upon what we saw it will be spectacular when completed. Three huge multi-tiered pools with waterfalls, lagoon, and new pool bar.

We stayed in the historic hotel and didn’t hear any noise from the construction, but I am sure it would be annoying if you were in the newer rooms. It appeared they didn’t start until about 10:00 AM and were done by 4:00 PM. The Asian rim restaurant “Zen” rates as one of the top five restaurants where I have ever eaten.

We were told they just got permits to install an elevator down to the beach, no time frame on that. They are also going to start on building a small store with food and drink items for those so interested. Currently, they run a shuttle around noon to a full service grocery store a short distance away.

All construction is supposed to be completed within 18 months and that includes the newest full ownership condo building, which is currently just a shell.

All the posted comments about activities are correct. This is the quite side of the island and the Crane is pretty much self contained. If you want any thing else you will need a car or stay on the west side.
