The Crane Resort - Stay Away!!!

I am writing this from my plunge pool suite at the Crane Resort right now. I am over 50 years of age, have a professional degree, and have never left a review for anything before. We arrived on Sunday and depart tomorrow (a Friday). The resort is quite beautiful and luxurious, and the restaurants are fantastic. Nevertheless, we won't be coming back. Ever. It is a self-serve resort (with the exception of the restaurants). Short list of quirks: (i) four flights of stairs up the side of a cliff from the beach because the elevator has not worked for all but a few hours of our stay; (ii) Although there is air conditioning on site, most of the people we have spoken to have complained that it isn't working in their rooms - and it is sweltering in ours as well. This AFTER having a technician check everything the day we arrived, and also having a face-to-face with a manager who offered nothing other than his ear to listen. You are nuts to come in summer...you can find many reviews online echoing this problem. The resort continues to purposely deny the issue; (iii) Staff at pools is non-existent. Want a chaize? A towel? A side table? A drink? You have to get your own. Only at the beach does the service approach a standard befitting the resort's boastfulness. Best part, though, is you can't get a towel without leaving a "towel card" which you only get back if you return the towels yourself. Yesterday, when we returned our towels, they had no towel cards left to give us (figure that one out!), so today we had no right to towels at all. No real loss though, as the adult pool had no towels available, and we were told it was closed.

Both elevators and air conditioning require electricity, which is about the most expensive thing there is in Barbados. Staff cost money, which affects profit and loss. This is a time share primarily and return on investment matters more here than do the guests. Oh, and here's another taste of The Crane Resort hospitality: they have a promotion through Amex Platinum Card, where you get a special Amex rate if you book using your Platinum Card. Although we did not use this promotion - because we got a better price booking with the hotel directly - the resort refuses to accept Amex for room payment and they demand payment in full on arrival. Wonder what would have happened if I had not brought my emergency Visa...this place belongs in a Kafka novel. Do yourself a favour and go to Half Moon Resort in Jamaica. Food is not nearly as good, but everything else is WAAAAAAY better.

I'm confused. Are you in Barbados or Jamaica?

Interesting complaint. Not sure what the price of electricity in Barbados has to do with an elevator in Jamaica?

The Crane Resort is in Barbados, not Jamaica. Profit is equal to revenue minus expense, therefore spending as little as possible on things like staff and electricity (for air conditioning and elevators) increases profit.

By way of further update, we booked two restaurants on two separate nights through the concierge desk. They never followed through and neither reservation was booked. One of them was a 30 minute drive away and we were turned away from the restaurant.

Upon departure we called the bell desk to have them come fetch our luggage, only to be told there were no bellmen available. So I suppose The Crane expects their guests to carry their own luggage down four or more flights of stairs...

Following our return home, I received an online survey which I filled out. Have never before seen a resort survey that had a specific questions asking you to rate the air conditioning...obviously the resort knows they have a serious problem in that area.

Following completion of the survey I received an email from The Crane that their general manager wished to speak to me about the terrible service. I replied by email, twice, and also left a voice mail on the general manager's voice mail...but still no further word from them...which is entirely consistent with their horrible service.

Heed my advice and stay away, or go at your own peril. What I can tell you is that this is the worst service I have ever experienced at any hotel anywhere ever.

You should post on Trip Advisor. A lot more people will see your warning than here.
