The Caribbean Challenge - Vacation Help Needed!

Hey there, fellow Fodorites. My wife and I and our one year old daughter are trying to plan a vacation and have reached a dead end. Perhaps you can help. Here are the qualifiers:

Looking to travel for 4 nights/5 days minimum during the third week of August

We would like a direct flight from JFK/EWR + we don't need a seat for our daughter

Flight length should be a max of 4 to 5 hours

Must be international (but we're not interested in Canada right now) and preferably in the Caribbean

Must be somewhere new - we've been to: USVI, BVI, St. Maartin, Bahamas, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Cancun

Would like to stay at a resort OR a well equipped B&B that's walking distance from the beach.

Our budget is 2K

We first started thinking about Bermuda but were concerned with the apparently exorbitant cost of room and board there. However, the direct flight is only 330 USD from JFK and is only 2 hours, which is why we're still considering it.

I'm pretty frustrated since I consider myself a pretty good internet searcher and this time, I'm ready to give up and pack it in.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Best,

You'll get the most bang for your $2,000 in the Dominican Republic which is about 4 hours from NYC area airports. There are litterly hundreds of All Inclusive Resorts on that island.

Another destination, you can reach non-stop (on Sundays and Wednesdays only) is St. Kitts. The Marriott there has occasional "special deals" which are in your price range. You should also check out Timothy Beach Resort.

Look too at staying at one of the beachfront "condo resorts" on Providenciales' Grace Bay in the Turks & Caicos. It's about a 3 1/2 hour flight from NYC airports. For starters check out Ocean Club or Ocean Club West, Coral Gardens or The Sands.

Try this in Bermuda. I don't know if they permit children, but if they do it might fit your requirements. Ocean Winds Bed and Breakfast Bermuda

Another option is www.bermudagetaway.com or www.bermudarentals.com These are apartments or small houses which would be a great solution if you are looking to save $$$$.

Also you might call Alex at Fourways Inn and ask him for the lowest rate available for your dates. There are fridges and microwaves in all the rooms and breakfast is included in the rate. The beach will be a pretty long walk wiht a little one so you will have to rely on transportation there.

My vote goes to www.oceanclubresorts.com at their Ocean Club West property.
1. Quick, direct flight.

2. Absolutely gorgeaous beach with condo properties that walk right out to the pool & beach.

3. Huge grocery store a 5 min. walk---great to have with a child in tow.

4. Casual restaurant with a bar right at the beach & pool open for all 3 meals.

5. Beach chair, umbrella situation is just perfect. Plenty for all. As a matter of fact, to us it was the best in all of our 20+ Caribbean trips.

6. Fantastic pool & beach for children.

7. Walking distance to shops and many restaurants.

We have been there 3 times and will return next March with our grandchildren.

Good Luck!

I'm with Roamsaround 100%. We've been all over the Caribbean, and the Dominican Republic is by far the best travel deal..it is a total hidden gem! We stayed at Hotel La Catalina (lacatalina.com) on the uncrowded north coast and are planning to go back. It is a b&b type hotel, but has all the amenities you could want. Call and talk to Ashleigh who can help you with your planning. And the north coast beaches are the best in the Caribbean, IMHO, and food/lodging/activities are not overpriced there, as it is not tourist trap. There are direct flights into Puerto Plata from the NY area. You just can't go wrong with the D.R.!
