Hello,
My mother and stepfather gave our family the Christmas present of a lifetime. We're all grown, many with kids, and we'll all be going to an AI in Cayo Coco at the end of June for a week. While we love the nieces and nephews, my husband and I are wondering about daytrips to consider. I'd love to see Havana. Is it possible as a daytrip? Who organizes? And, are there other must-see places while in Cuba?
Thanks so much for any advice,
Carrie

We always take a snorkel day trip and have never been disappointed.
Havana may be a little too far away for a day trip but I believe there was an overnight offered. We rented a car and hired one of the hotel staff as a guide. We were able to do several of the "excursions" offerred by the hotel in one day for a total cost of $100 for the car rental and $20 for the guide. The hotel price was $35 pp (avg.) for each excursion. We were also able to visit several towns, a market, bank, typical Cuban restaurant, sugar plantation, gator farm, picnic/vacation spot etc. - not all were on the hotel excursion list.
The Cayo Coco area is on a key and therefore connects to the mainland over long causeways. Access to this area is strictly controlled and only the Cubans working at the hotels are allowed to cross over. The hotels are kept separate from the rest of Cuba - not like the Veradero area where the hotels are near the areas inhabited by the locals.
Should you decide to rent a car and tour this way, make sure you take your passport with you as the guard at the gate will ask to see it.
One other city to consider as a day trip would be the Spanish colonial city of Trinidad on the south coast.
The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been wonderfully restored. I spent 4 days wandering about it's many galleries, museums and wonderful music places. I'm sure you'd enjoy a day there.
Your resort should have an excursion to there.
