St. Thomas to St. John

My husband and I are going to St. John in February and are staying at Coconut Coast Villas for 5 nights. As we need to fly into St. Thomas, we decided to stay there for 2 nights before crossing to St. John. It may be hard to get reservations at this point, but we're wondering where to stay in St. Thomas. I can't figure out the best location, considering we won't have a car and we'll need to get to the ferry to cross to St. John. I was thinking we would rent a jeep when we get to St. John but hoped we could manage without a car in St. Thomas.

Any advice on where to stay; which town and a recommended hotel? We don't need super-luxury, but thought we might splurge a little, and would love a great view. Nightlife doesn't matter too much, but we like good food and local flavor in more than just food. We're looking forward to nature on St. John and figure we'll get a different experience on St. Thomas. Any advice?
