I have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at Marriott Morningstar on St. Thomas. In the past, I have used this place for just a couple days for shopping and dining. Having just five days, I decided to stay there for the entirity of this trip.
Morningstar is lovely being directly on the beach with beautifully manicured lawn and gardens. There are just five separate two and three story buildings with 140 rooms, creating and aire of privacy and intamacy. My gardenview room was clean and lovely complete with an automatic icemaker and electronic safe. The staff were efficient and friendly with the front desk always addressing me by name.
The big improvement is the food!. I was told they have a new executive chef who obviously did much to make such a positive difference. My favorite meals there were the Thai grilled beef salad, (I had it for lunch thre times), at Frenchman's reef Sunset grill, Ahi grilled tuna salad, Cruzan rum coconut shrimp, and the Prime Rib, lobster/seafood buffet, breakfast fruit platter at Morningstars Coco Joes, in addition to the breakfast buffet at Frenchman s Reef, Windows.
That being said, the creme de le creme of my dining experienceswas at Havanna Blue. There, food is brought to an art form in both taste and presentation I had dinner there twice and my only regret was not having this experience at least one more time. Every dish was fabulous along with their very extensive wine list, and superb unique, multi choice margaritas, To me this is the best restaurant on the British/US Virgin Islands, and would be challenging to fine other comparable restaurants any where.
I am very happy that i spent my all too short trip there. It was a most enjoyable stay.

havana blue is one of my most favorite restaurants. love the look - love the food. glad to hear it's still wonderful.
just today read trip report/complaint of morningstar rooms being in need of some repairs & updating. did it seem like that has been done?
what else did you do besides eat? not that beach-eat-sleep doesn't sound ideal just now!
I did a half day sail/snorkel to Buck Island on the Jolly Mon. Boat takes a maximum of six people and was roomy and comfortable. Other passengers were snorkeling newbies and loved it. I, as an experienced snorkeler found the mandatory floation vest, while understandable, somewhat retrictive. Somehow, I became seperated from the rest of the four other passengers, and the guide and group went off without me. I explored on my own, but felt that had I been with the guide I would have seen more fish. As a result, the trip for me was just OK. The first few days, the water at Morningstar was calm, so I snorkled around the rocks to the left - Saw many juvenile seargent majors and some blue tangs, and that was enjoyable.
Most enjoyable shopping at Charlotte Amalie I found in Palm Passage, (a very lovely shopping passage between Main and the next street) Favorite shops include, Gallery St. Thomas where all works are made by local artists with price range from $10- to several thousands. Across from there is the Sharper Image where there are beautiful hand painted clothes, tees and swimwear as well as other goodies - all affordable. Big disappointment to learnthat Herve's no longer serves lunch, which on previous trips was a shopping trip highlight.
All in all I spent much time relaxing and recooperating from stresses left behind. I even managed to read two plus books a new Clyde Cussler, great adventures around the sea, Broadway Tails, feel good stories of rescued dogs and cats from shelters and became parts of Broadway productions, Game Change which I lost and will rebuy, (it's fascinating), and The Tourist which I just began on the flight home.
Not too exciting by some standards, but it made for a good trip.
thanks for good shopping tips. blue tang are one of my favs
