St Martin-Saint Maarten

Anybody been there recently? We are going just on a one day cruise stop. What do you think would be the most fun with a small child, age 5, very tiny for her age? Butterfly farm? We enjoy a beach if water is shallow. None of us are good swimmers, actually pretty much non-swimmers.

Also, reports of violent crime on this island seems to be the worst of any in the Caribbean. Any recent experience? We often decide what we want to do and just grab a taxi to go where we want or take a tour spur of the moment from people at the port. Is that safe? We do not want to rent a car. We have never done a ship's tour, always go off on our own, but should this be an exception?

Would it be reasonable to take the ferry or ten minute flight to St. Bart's or another close by island?
