Hello --
I am planning a vacation to St Martin this spring. I'm having a tough time finding a hotel on the French side that is walking distance to restaurants and shops. I don't plan to rent a car, so I am looking also hoping the hotel is near or on the beach. I've looked at Le Petit Hotel and Grand Case Beach Club which I think are fine, but does anyone have recommendations or suggestions for hotels? I am focused in the Grand Case area, but is there another area I should consider? Lastly, should we reconsider renting a car?
Thanks so much for your help!

La Samanna my fav I always rent a car with one of the majors carrentals.com. www.booking.com › Saint Martin › Baie Longue
Marigot small pretty hotels not too good pretty touristy.
mercure.com not to bad if budget is tight.Great food.
Happy Hunting!
The 2 best hotels in Grand Case are by far Hotel L'Esplanade and Le Petit Hotel.

If you aren't renting a car, Grand Case is by far your best bet location wise. I personally prefer the walk into town from L'Esplanade, it is down a lovely, gently sloped footpath...don't let the fact that they are not on the beach sway you, the views are stunning and it is very peaceful "on the hill, above the rest".

Good luck!
Hi redux2722
I suggest that you double click on kcpingc 's name above, and check his / her previuos posts. Then click on the one relating to hotels in St Martin and scroll down to read my response - it will save me time writing it all over again !
In regard to La Samanna, the property - which is very nice but not cheap - is situated close to the Dutch border, and is about as far away as you can get from anything interesting on the French side of the island, and is certainly not walking distance to anywhere !
The Mercure (also mentioned above) is located in Sandy Ground - not an area that I personally like, and certainly not an area where you should walk around after dark !
I suggest that you Google 'Hotels on Orient Beach, St Martin' and a range of choices will pop up. Take a look at the related websites, as this area could well be a viable alternative to Grand Case for you.
There is plenty to do there, with a selection of restaurants to choose from, lots of small shops, beach bars and water sports etc., and hotels right on the beach.
If you stay in either Grand Case or Orient Bay, you COULD probably get away without renting a car, but you will miss out on the rest of the island, unless you use taxis - which are not cheap, though car rental is.
