Trip Report St. Maartin 5 days safe and easy traveling

Jump to last reply

We just returned from a 5 days in St. Maarten (3/24-29). We attended a conference in Dawn Beach and traveled the island on half days. First trip impressions: St. Maarten is similar to other Caribbean islands (we didn't know what to expect). The Dutch vs. French division of the island is barely noticeable as there is no formal boundary crossing. That said, Phillipsburg is a tacky tourist cruise ship port, Marigot has a nice small shopping area and fort, Grand Case has a number of waterfront restaurants. Several nice beaches are along the French side and watching the planes land at Maho Beach is a fun diversion. We always felt safe and were never concerned in our travels or parking our car at any location, although we were not out late at night. We had no problems renting a car. Nice trip, but not so unique that we would return rather than explore other destinations.
