Trip is planned for March 2005. Looking primarily to snorkel, sunbathe, take an off-shore excursion to a nearby island and dine at some nice restaurants. Last year went to St. Thomas and took day trips to St. John and The Baths...looking for something similar. I'm worried that the Cayman Islands aren't recovered yet and I don't know much about St. Maarten/St. Martin. Anyone know how the snorkeling is at the two? Any other good snorkeling recommendations or one-day excursions? PLEASE HELP!
St. Maarten or Grand Cayman??

Based on what you like to do, I'd recommend St. Maarten. You can take a trip to either Anguilla or St. Barths for the day (or a longer flight to Statia or Saba). Lots of activities, and I love Friar's Bay Beach (but there's no hotel there). You have to have a car in St. Maarten, though, and I prefer staying on the French side. Snorkeling is just ok around St. Maarten, unlike Grand Cayman, where it's great. Grand Cayman the island is nice as well, but there's no other island nearby and you have to deal with the the hurricane damage if you are going in March. The other place to seriously consider is Guadeloupe, which has lots of good activities and nearby islands, but it's not easy to get to from the U.S.. Plus, it's very French (much more so than St. Martin), if that's a problem for you. But it's wild and beautiful.
