St. Maarten (first timer)

Recommendations for restaurants in St. Maarten. Is a car really necessary for an entire week or should we rent for a couple of days. Has anyone ever used Advantage car rental. Any suggestions appreciated.

if you want to enjoy st. maarten to the maximum, I recommend renting a car for the whole time. That way you can go to different beaches each day and eat out at different restaurants each night.
I am not sure what kind of dining you are interetsed in, but st. maarten has it all. a few of my favorites:

Spiga..Italian..grand Case..expensive..
Tropicana..French.. Marigot Marina..expensive
Le Plongoior.. frecnh Asian..Marigot..moderate
lee's Grill..Simpson Bay..grilled fish and ribs..inexpensive
the lo los next to the pier in grand case.. good cheap locala grill.
Yvette's..Orleans..great local food in a cute West Indian house. veyr inexpensive.
and of course Grand Case..the whole strret is lined with one fantastic french restaurant after another. My favorites there are Le tastevin and le Auberge Gourmand.

Just returned from a week on St. Maarten. Yes, definitely rent a car for the whole time. We rented from Unity Car Rental. Michael meets you at the airport and transports you to the Unity office where you complete paper work. You can google Unity Car Rental in St. Maarten for info and how to contact Michael. I arranged ours before we arrived and Michael even called me on the phone to discuss it. What part of the island are you staying on? We were on the Dutch side just south of the border on Dawn Beach. All the restaurants that Barbara mentioned are wonderful! La Playa on Orient Beach is wonderful for lunch. Enjoy!

I would definitely rent a car in St Martin. There are so many areas to explore and a car is the best way to do it. You will want to have dinner in Grand Case a few times. You really can't go wrong with any restaurant there. Click on my screen name and look for our two trip reports for specific restaurant recommendations.

To address your car question - We used Kenny's car rental the second time we went to St Martin. We were very satisfied with the car and the service. I would recommend going to the website www.traveltalkonline.com to get more info on St Martin. They also have a link to Kenny's car rental. That website was very helpful to us when we planned our trips. For our first trip we rented our car from Avis. The Avis car had no get up and go to it. We christened it the "I think I can car" because we weren't sure it would make it up the hills.

I echo everyone's recommendation for a car rental for the whole week; we use Budget. As to retaurants...the lolos in Grand Case ( Talk of the Town)..ribs, 2 salads, johnny cake and a pop or beer and the bill is about $20US for 2 people. And if you're really lucky there's a server who makes ice cream; chocolate or banana. We also like Le Plongeoir, Brasserie de la Gare in the Marina and Bistrot de la Mer on the Harbourfront.
