St Lucia - Anse Chastenat - Crazy rate for a basic room without any confort

I contacted Anse Chastenet hotel by email to book a nice room and they suggested me "the best room in the hotel" for 1500 US dollars. When i arrived i was very disappointed by the room which was large but basic and they just sold me the more expensive room of the property with a supposed private pool which is not really private as the neighbors have a pluging view on it and the pool is also outside of my compound just before the main door to access the room. And at night i eard voices very closed and i get up to see a couple bathing in my "private" pool. As the lights were switched off, they probably thought the room was empty and also asnthey don't have to enter in my compound : they thought it was a public pool accessible for all guests. When you pay 1500 US dollars a night without any meal plan : you can expect the best of the best with all modern confort, some sophistication, Refined environment and all services. Here you don't have anything : there is no phone to call reception and in case you need something you have to go there, the minibar was empty with 1 bottle of water, there was no AC and i awake at night because it was too hot for me, there is of course no TV and Wifi is cutting regularly. There is almost no furniture : a large bed with a net, but the mattress was too soft and it was probably the cheapest available, there is not the usual bench to put your suitcase : the only place is the bed or the floor !, there is no table and no chair inside the room. I had a terrace but in the afternoon it was really too hot without any breeze and i have been bitten twice (hand and leg) after 30minutes. There was mosquitos inside and outside and no repellent and normally for that rate in any other hotel : you have repellent provided. So after, i closed the doors, i refuge inside and i stayed in my room protected by the bed's net. And of course the room was dark wothout any view from inside. The bathroom don't have any nets at windows to be protected from mosquitos (which are attracted by lights) and in St Lucia, they have zika, chikungunya, malaria, dengue in St Lucia like in all Caribbean !! so it's really great from the management of the hotel to take so much take about the customer's health. The only advantage of this room is a view of the top of the pitons from the terrace (not the best one which is the entire pitons falling in the sea) but this view can't justify such crazy rate for such basic room, specially when the view can been seen from many places around. So i am very angry to have been abused by this hotel with such bad and expensive room and i am just expecting to run away to another hotel tomorrow. Last night, i was i another hotel for 450 US dollars with a wonderful seaview from the room and i regreat to have left it because eveything was much better and the room was much confortable. So the management of Anse Chastenet thinks they can sold a basic room for 1 month salary in western countries (probably months in St Lucia) without any charm, any view from the room and any confort but it's wrong and i don't recommend that hotel. Caribbean hotels can be expensive and in many cases you have value for your money. But it's very far to be the case at Anse Chastenet. I know all caribbean islands as i am coming every year and for the price of this basic motel room at Anse Chastenet, you have really luxery hotels (5 real stars) with sophisticated room, nice furniture, decoration and 5 stars services for instance in Saint Barthelemy or Saint Martin with the french touch on top. Barbados, Antigua, Grenadines, Anguilla and Grenada have also high end 5 stars boutique hotels for a cheaper rate. Because for 1500 us dollars per night, which is the more expensive hotel i ever paid in the caribbean, you can get the real 5 stars hotels with the right level which was not the case at Anse Chastenet. Considering the confort of the room : Anse Chastenet will be a 2 or 3 stars hotel in any country of the world.

How many people were in your party? I ask because that price is so far out of my price range, I just had to see how bad it could be. Anyway, the most expensive room they have listed (and I looked on three different sites) was around $700 dollars, including breakfast and dinner. Still way out of my budget, but nowhere near what you say they charged you.

Thank you for this reminder to do at least a tiny bit of research before choosing a Caribbean hotel.

You signed up for a $1500/night room without researching the hotel?

Yikes.

It's interesting that OP registered here just to post 2 very negative reviews (one for a beach resort in the Caribbean and one for a beach resort in the South Pacific) in two days. Very suspect.

I find it amazing that someone would book such expensive places without doing their homework. I research places just for short weekend getaways let alone an expensive tropical trip. Yikes.....

First i posted reviews when i want and i have no duty and i have no time for that except when it's necessary. I spend more than 100 nights per year in hotels and really i think a lot of people have really time to waste writing comments when they have no reasons to not believe it. And when i am happy with a hotel, i don't post anything because it's normal to be satisfied. sh Fodors to allow pictures and i will be delightes to post them from all over the world

it's why i requested the suppression of my account to Fodors. The level is a bit low for me when most of people are spending their time to think than others people are lying ! i didn't lie for anything so this is my last post. And tell me the motive of such behavior ? is it suspect to have only 2 reviews ? as i said , i just post some comments when i was very disatisfied. Now i am not a sofa-traveller and i am at the airport of Barbados leaving to Grenada - but somebody will say very probably its' obviously a lie and i have a lot to discover over the world and no time to waste my time in vain polemics. ADIOS

It is actually also very helpful to post reviews of places you do like and think are a good value. Several times I have stayed in wonderful hotels because some other fodorite mentioned them in a trip report or suggested them to someone else. One of my top ten favorites is in Turkey and I stayed there because another Fodorite wrote about it and said it was his favorite. One of my favorite walled cities is in France and another Fodorite wrote about it favorably, so I went there and ended up staying three nights.

You seem to travel a lot. It would be great if, for example, you posted your favorite hotels on each island in the Caribbean.

So travelers should only post when they have a bad experience? I'm just curious to what your thoughts are as to how any resort in the world gets a reputation without getting the good and the bad reviews? Traveling as much as you say....how would you not recognize this? If only bad reviews were ever written, how would anyone know where the best resorts are? Curious minds want to know.....

How could I miss this thread ?

So we have a guy who
- posts only for negative reviews;
- cannot write (what a rambling of a post);
- cannot check the place he goes to for such an amount of money;
- considers throwing out money means getting first rate service;
- doesn't know there are mosquitoes in Caribbeans;
- considers us too low for his taste.

I am not sure I am going to feel so much empathy for OP.

Some people have too much money and too little brains.
That is the typical behaviour of a few of the so called 'parvenus' who make it possible for Lenins and Che Guevarra's to promote communism.

1500 $ a night and not able to choose right. For an experienced traveler who spends 100 nights a year in hotels. Shame.
