St Kitts or Nevis Snorkeling?

We will be arriving in January on a cruise ship and would like to spend our day snorkeling. Any suggestions. Thanks

This is just a suggestion, but St. Kitts/Nevis is not known for snorkeling. It was just OK - not nearly as good as other parts if the Caribbean.
If you have other ports of call, I'm sure there are islands you will be visiting with better snorkeling.
If you really want to go, I know of Captain Knox who operates out of Oualie Beach on Nevis who has a catamaran and does a nice snorkel cruise. (He goes to St. Kitts also.)
I would instead recommend an island tour of St. Kitts, which has much more fascinating above-water sights to see.
You can see the whole island in a day, and there are many interesting places such as the large fort at Brimstone Hill. The last I heard, they were resurrecting the island railroad which used to service the sugar cane industry. That would be fun to do as the tracks have a great view of the gorgeous mountain on St. Kitts (Mt. Liamuiga, I think?)
Regardless of what you decide to do while in port, you'll enjoy your time there. It's really lovely.

I would agree with Nancy and do an island tour if I was on a cruise ship unless you really want to snorkel.I beg to differ with Nancy about the snorkeling. While St Kitts may not be the "best" in the caribbean but SK has some excellent snorkel sites. In Frigate Bay from Timothy Beach Resort around the point all the way to South Frair's Bay. On the South peninsula, South Frairs Beach, White House Bay, (rocky beach but great snorkeling), Cockel shell and Turtle Beach on the end of the South Peninsula are also great sites.

I completely agree with Bill on the snorkeling on St. Kitts. My husband and I had a ball snorkeling at each place he noted in his post. We especially loved South Friar's Bay. There is a man-made reef in the water which is looooong. We saw so many types of fish, it was amazing! We saw barracuda's smack dabb in front of us, starfish, clownfish and angelfish, mahi-mahi, and the highlight was a small school of squid which changed colors from transluscent to dark brown nad back again right in front of our eyes. It was delightful.

I would definitely suggest going to SFB for the best snorkeling, and a real close 1.5 goes to right in front of Timothy Beach Resort. There is a hill/mountain to the left of the property with rocks in the water, making it a haven for so many types of fish. We snorkeled at both places every single day we were there and couldn't get enough.

We found Nevis waters gorgeous, but very little to see in the water, unless you went out to Shitten Bay, which is only accessible by boat.

Have a super time!

I think I'm gonna have to disagree with Bill and Shawn on this one and cast my vote for Nancy.

For people who claim that snorkeling in St Kitts/Nevis is world-class, the adage that "ignorance is bliss" probably applies. The question that needs to be asked is "Compared to what?". In what other places have you snorkeled? I have snorkeled at Hanauma Bay in Oahu, Baby Beach in Aruba and Paradise Island in Nassau, just to name a few, and they all are far superior that what you would find in St Kitts.

I guess everything is relative and I guess snorkeling in St Kitts could be considered awesome when compared to snorkeling in a swamp near New Orleans. Sorry guys, but you're gonna have to try other Carib snoreling sites before we can take your judgement seriously. On the other hand, if you really think snorkeling in St Kitts is just unbeatable, then more power to you.
well, I will tell anyone who doesn't like the snorkeling on St. Kitts that they did not try every spot. Between White House Bay, South Friars and Turtle Beach, there are so many different varieties of fish, clear and smooth waters and many varieties of coral. Moreover, you don't need to take a boat to do it. Since the beaches are not crowded, you also do not have to worry about tons of people running the fish off. But I've seen schools of squid, rays, eels, and numbers of other brightly colored fish. The sunken tug boat off of White House Bay is great too.

I too have snorkeled at Baby beach in Aruba and loved it... and I've snorkeled off the Mexican and Belize coasts, Anguilla, Antigua, St. Barths, the Bahamas, Barbados, Caymans and Hawaii. St. Kitts may not have the best snorkeling of all of these, but it has excellent snorkeling with the best advantage being that you can snorkel right from the beach.

You can have a private boat meet you at the cruise ship tender dock and sail you to St. Kitt's (about an hour) spend an hour or so there and sail back. It's a nice way to see both islands from the water, very peaceful and the snorkeling isn't bad in Shitten Bay.
