Hello, everyone! I keep thinking of new questions. I'm so grateful for your responses...I've been planning this trip for a long time and you're really helping me pinpoint what we want to do.
For now, we have a small SUV reserved with Thrifty for a week. I believe it's a "Jimny or similar". Does anyone know if there's a good rental agency that will absolutely guarantee a Jeep Wrangler? I wouldn't mind paying a little more if they can guarantee it. My husband is a Jeep enthusiast and it would make the trip even more enjoyable for him.
Also, I've been reading dozens of horror stories about lost luggage on US Air from the States to San Juan and from San Juan to St. Kitts (Caribbean Sun). Which airline is the culprit? Does anyone have tips to avoid this headache? I already plan on packing 2 days worth of clothing in my carry-on, but I'm not sure if I can truly relax with my luggage off on its own vacation...
THANKS!!!

I've never seen a "jeep" brand SUV on the Island.
A Wrangler would be a very large vehicle in proportion to what you'll find.
Make sure thatyou are aware of the condition of the tires before you do any offroading.
The back canefield roads are very offroad and very remote so be careful!
Also, make sure that you have a pare and jacking tools.
Sometimes these are missing!
ie: wrong size lug wrench for the lug nuts.
The rental agencies also do a very through pre rental walk around inspection with you, noting all scratches and dents.
We also like to go on some "paths"less traveled and have learned to ask for a more beat up 4x4 than the newer ones.
The 4x4's are of the Vitara catagory.
I could put one in the back of my pick up, or so it would seem.
In all my trips to SK, I've never seen a Jeep Wrangler for rent. In fact, never seen "American" brand cars for rent. Usually they are Susuki, Daihatsu, etc.
I also have never had my luggage lost on the way there, just on the way back. Just pack some extra in the carryon, and if your luggage is lost....there is plenty of great shopping to be done then!
Thank you, Santa and caribqueen! I wouldn't think to look for a spare or a proper lug wrench in a rental. Caribqueen, you've put some ideas in my head! If you have any favorite places to shop, check out my most recent question. Thanks!
