You really have to know what you're doing if you're going to crew it yourself. There are customs issues (some waters are British), the tie ups are crowded, etc.
We rent a charter with a captain -- Palm Tree Charters. It's a very relaxing, super fun day. It runs around $800.
basalt: I know you are going to get teased about this, but if you mean St John, USVI and not St John's, Antigua... you can rent a dinghy in Cruz Bay and visit the north shore beaches.
