St John Where to Stay
Would 1 nt at Caneel Resort be enough, & then the rest of the nts at a small place like Hillcrest?
Checked rates at Caneel in June. Would be $400/nt. Also, can anyone confirm the reviews regarding Caneel..Read great things about beaches, but that bugs are a problem in hotel.
Also is June good time to go?

In my op8inion, one night would not be enough. Your room would probably not be ready until mid-afternoon. By the time you get settled, there would be just a brief time to enjoy the beach before dinner. Check-out is 11 A.M. which would give you only a brief time for breakfast and the beach before you would have to chrck-out. If you could manage a minimum of two nights, you would probably find your stay more enjoyable and relaxing.
This November, I have returned from my tenth stay, and have never had a problem with bugs. My room is always on the second floor. Perhaps that makes a difference.

If you could swing it, I'd definitely recommend more than a night at Caneel for the same reasons mentioned by Diane.
Bugs can be a problem but I think that's more an issue with St. John (and most of the Caribbean in general) than Caneel specifically. If you are aware of it and go in prepared, it shouldn't damper your trip. Here's my trip report if you want my take on Caneel:

I lost track of how many people you are travelling with and how long you were thinking of staying on St. John but did you try the VRBO website for places in Cruz Bay, SJ? If it is 2-4 of you look at 12182, 70655, 31150, or 37974 and the others that are in your size and price range- also look at the website for Lavender Hill suites if you haven't already- you would have great views, full kitchens and (shared) pools with those and some look very nice. Just a suggestion.

Sorry- I am not familiar with Hillcrest but I looked at the website. I also looked at the others and found some of them more appealing from what I remember about the locations in SJ. Go to www.frommers.com and look up St. John and "hotels, etc" and read the short review of Lavendar Hill- If you also click on the "maps" site on Frommers you can see where things are located. I just think that LH is well located close to restaurants, shops, town, etc. and is worth a look- especially with a recommendation from Frommers about value and amenities. It is nice to have a full condo and a full kitchen since there are some nice markets on SJ where you can buy things to do some of your own breakfasts and snacks, cocktail makings, etc. to save a little money to spend on special things while you are there. Since there is a pool and grill, etc. then it is nice also after a long day at the beach and snorkeling, etc. to just pick up a steak, stay in and enjoy the gorgeous view. We did that 2 or 3 times when we were in SJ for the relaxation but also because eating lunch out was more reasonable than eating dinner out every night.
