None of the 8 guide books we read prior to our St Barts vacation nor any of the people we spoke to mentioned how hilly and very scary it can be driving around St Barts. For most people this is probably not an issue but be forwarned .... if you are afaid of steep hills or heights St Barts is not for you!

Jimmy, I don't think the driving there is as scary as landing there in a plane. Whew! I'll get there by boat, thanks!
Anything hard to get to and hard to get around on must be worth it or no one would go. Speaking from one who knows, the thrill of arriving and driving are a part of the overall enjoyment of St Barts.
Island driving is a total life experience(scary, exciting, beautiful). It is dangerous driving hilly terrain, to say the least, but essential. It is TIREING to island drive St. Lucia, Dominica, as well as any Mountainuos Island. Hairpin
turns that shoot up to dizzying elevations that fall down steep declines(leaves you like a half CRAZED roller coaster victim). Some so steep that any stopping along the way down, is impossible(you cannot stop till you get to the bottom, or you crash, or roll over!)Oh never forget rain on the road, on steep inclines you my slip back, slide, then lose some control, its freaky...use caution!!!!
Unfortunately third world country roads are NOT what we are used to, so, it is rough at first...but if you prevail, you will always come back for another 4 wheel drive! REMEMBER GO SLOW, FORGET THE ASSHOLE BEHIND YOU THAT IS TAILGATING YOU....ISLANDERS DO IT ON PURPOSE(tailgating) TO SCARE YOU...they know the roads well, and know ALL(well most) tourists are fearful while driving. GO SLOW...you wont get a ticket,
and it can save your life!
Happy Driving!
