My husband and I are moving from Europe to the US in 2004 to join my father's transportation business. He has a small, but important, hub in Miami, which is staffed primarily by Cubans. We know we need to learn Spanish - and thought about doing an intense course in Cuba before going back (we both have Dutch passports so don't think travelling there is problem). Our biggest hitch is that we have 2 kids (7 mos and 2yrs now) and we want them to go with us. Does anyone have recommendations on language schools or the best (and also economical) way to do accomodation and babysitting? If we go, we'd like to stay a month or more. Thanks, Tracy

Hola Tracy
Here is a link to the Cactus language program, which offers Spanish language classes in may countries, Cuba included. It might give you some thoughts and perhaps an avenue to explore.

In addition, here is the website for the University of Havana (the site is in Spanish) which might also help, and an additional listing of departments and contacts for University level stuff in Hanana.

As to the accommodation/cost issue, one very viable option would be to consider staying in a Casa Particular. These are LEGAL private guest homes. Some of these even include small kitchen facilities which could help keep your costs down if you want to cook for yourself.
It should be quite easy to arrange a Casa and also babysitting/nanny services while you at school each day.
I stay at a Casa in Havana and could ask the wife/husband that own the house if this would be possible for you. You can see photos of the Casa if you go to my Cuban photo website and look for the link "Casa Magaly".
My site is at

note there is no www in the URL and the site is a free-hosted site so if you can't get in today, try again tomorrow.
You can contact me directly from the Contact Steve link on the site.
Good luck and enjoy the Cuban experience.
