Snorkeling: St. Kitts, Barbados, Dominica, PR?

Jump to last reply

DH and I are taking a cruise to the Caribbean in January and I'm starting to plan our activities while we are there. One thing we'd like to do is snorkel and I'm a bit confused about which of the islands we'll be visiting have good snorkeling locations and which do not. We'll only be in each port for one day (except PR, more on that later) so if a particular island has a better option than snorkeling, such as a rainforest or something, then I'd rather spend our time doing that and save the snorkeling for the "good" places. We are not the kind of people who like to lay around on beaches, although we don't mind visiting for a little bit and taking pictures. We really like nature walks/hikes, and DH loves his photography. We don't mind a little shopping but that's not a main activity for us.

The cruise leaves from San Juan, PR, and we're flying in ahead of time so we'll have 2 full days in PR before the ship leaves. I was figuring a day for Old San Juan and a day for El Yunque, but if there is great snorkeling in PR and a good rainforest at one of the other stops, then we could always snorkel in PR instead of going to El Yunque.

Before I go on I have to mention DH grew up in St. Thomas and he only agreed to go on this cruise because all but one of the stops will be new to him. He generally has no desire to take cruises to the Bahamas or the Caribbean so I'm thrilled to find one he would agree to go on.

Ports of call include Tortola, which my husband has visited many times. He didn't seem to think the snorkeling there was all that good and maybe we should to the Baths at Virgin Gorda instead.

Another stop is St. Maarten. I was just there recently on a cruise with my grandkids and I understand the snorkeling there is not that great so we'll probably just rent a car and drive around the island and explore.

That leaves St. Kitts, Barbados, and Dominica. Neither one of us knows anything about these islands so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
