Curacao is great for snorkling. The "beaches" are actually small coves scattered all over the island. The windward side is not good due to large waves but the small beaches are wonderful. The reefs are close to shore and you can swim out to them. There usually is alot of broken coral at the wave line (not big surf) so it "hurts" to walk barefoot (use water socks or your fins). I've never seen so much fish. Clear water.
There are several waterfront resorts/hotels to chose. The one close to the SeaAquarium (can't recall the name) seems to get rave reviews.
You will want to rent a car to see the island. There is lots to see and do.
Curacao is very arid and has been likened to Arizona on the beach.
Contact to Curacao Tourist Board for good info and maps. (its free). You can find them on the net.
