Unless we or our snorkel trip boatjust did not know where to go we were very disappointed on our last trip to Bonaire in late 2007. Our fist trip in 1992 or 1993 was one of the best in terms of snorkeling. The reasons the locals gave us were that hurricane Mitch really devastated the shallow reef coral plus the affects of pollution and global warming had bleached a portion of the coral. This fortunately was not the case for divers below 40 ft. That said better places now I might suggest are St.John, and Grand Cayman though here to several major hurricanes have really impacted the snorkeling. We went over to Cayman Brac once and the snorkeling was much better but it is quite an isolated place. We haave turned our destinations now to Belize where the snorkeling is far better than anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere, in our opinion.
you could consider tobago cays in st. vincent & grenadines. you have to go by boat - either as a daytripper from one of the nearby island (palm, union, mayreau) or you can do a liveaboard trip
virginia is correct Tobago caye is really the best but it a snorkel destination. If you stayed at any of the islannds she suggested though there is very little good snorkeling other than that spot. We stayed at Petit St. Vincent (PSV)which is on it's own atoll a few times is located such that Tobago Caye is only 30 minutes away so we made 2 trips there. PSV has a small island 3 minutes off it's shore that has decent snorkeling so that you are not in a no-snorkel zone other than tobago Caye. But if you were staying on Mayrau we found it to be poor snorkeling at least in 2006.
