I don't think you've given us enough information to even try to answer this question.
The question is where are you staying and what kinds of "active" excursions are you planning? Car rentals in PR aren't too terribly expensive, but gas is expensive, and almost all hotels charge for parking, both in San Juan and along the North Coast. If staying outside of those areas, then parking is probably free. So you have to consider all of this when deciding whether or not to rent a car. The size of the family matters as well. You'll pay a huge premium for a large car if you have more than 2 kids along. There are a lot of companies that offer excursions, so you may find that you don't want to travel every day and don't want to pay for parking. I think it's unrealistic to think you'll take "several" excursions a day, but you may want to do one thing every day.
