Should I rent a car in Aruba?
As you can tell by my screen name, I travel solo. I am an amateur photographer and wanted to know if I should rent a 4x4 for the week that I am in Aruba? I am just wondering if it would be cost effective and safe to travel around the island alone.

Not sure about cost effective, but it's definitely safe, convenient and worthwhile. Some places are best reached with a 4X4 especially towards the east coast (you can't drive in some areas, some are gravel road and others paved, We drove to a ranch and then took a horse riding tour to the natural pool). You have the freedom to stop where you want and how long you want.

Yes is safe to drive around solo. Take the same precautions you would at home. Lock your valuables out of sight in the trunk.
If you are going to spend your entire vacation driving around the island taking photographs I would say that renting a 4 x 4, for the reasons mentioned previously, would be well worthwhile.
If you do plan on some r & r on the beach then another good option is to rent a car for a portion of your stay, say 3 out of 8 days. You can easily get around to restaurants and shopping and between Eagle and Palm beaches via taxi or public bus.

Ok. I just called to confirm my trip and found that the reservation for the car magically disappeared. Most of the companies that I have contacted are booked for the time period (12.27 thru 01.02.
Do I really need a vehicle? I would like to go to the Northern shore just to shoot photos.

Solo_wolf I rented a car for 12/23-12/30 from wheels2go http://www.wheels2goaruba.com/. As of a couple of weeks ago they still had availability. A 4x4 would have been convenient for what you are looking for but a car will do okay.
If they do not have anything still available, send me a message through the link on my profile.

Solo, YES rent a car, or 4x4. Most areas a car works just fine, I don't know your budget but a 4x4 isn't that much more a day. I rented from Royal. Its almost like rent a wreck, but they are great folks, and no worries on the condition of the vehicle! Aruba is a must see by car. Besides the wild windward coast line, you absolutely must hike up Hooiberg. It will likely be one of your most enjoyable times, not to mention some great pics. Go for sunrise, and for sunset. Trust me, do not miss out (its mid-Island, google it). Enjoy, I love Aruba (though am headed to Antigua for the first time in Jan this year, hope it doesn't pale too much in comparison to Aruba). Oh, and its totally safe, just like anywhere, be wise and don't valuables out laying around.

We rented a jeep in Aruba and it had no sides, so you can't leave anything unattended in the jeep.
I think you will find it interesting to drive around if you want take photos.
Do you think your hotel can rent you a jeep for a day or two?I would contact them and see if they can do that.
We found Aruba a safe and friendly island both in the resort areas and away from them!
