Short Caribbean trip for diving

Hi all

Looking to possibly take husband on a quick getaway for diving purposes in the Caribbean for his 40th bday in July. Wondering if people can recommend an island easy to get to from major hubs such as Toronto or Newark, good diving and generally cheap. Maybe asking a lot. I only want to go for 4-5 days so it has to be easy to get to.

Thanks
KD

kayak.com makes it easy to find out where you can reasonably fly to.
best diving would be grand cayman, turks & caicos or usvi/bvi. st. thomas would be least expensive of these but is a very busy island.
plenty of other options but all further south

Grand Cayman is world class diving and easy to get to, but it is not what I consider cheap.....I think it's actually very expensive.

I would look into Cozumel. Should have a choice of flying into Cancun, then taking a ferry over.....or you might find flights directly into Coz, but they will be more expensive. World class diving there, and lodging & food is very affordable.

Grand Cayman is known for the diving but (as above) I doubt it's "cheap".

Cozumel (Mexico) is a good suggestion for better prices.

Bonaire is also a diving destination and it's not as expensive as Grand Cayman. I don't know how easy it would be for you to reach though.

Grand Cayman is the best island for snorkeling/diving and then Cozumel. Some people will throw in St. John, Turks and Caicos or Curacao, but we didn't see it like that. Have not been to Bonaire to make the comparision as it is quite difficult and expensive to get to from our area.

If you want inexpensive, Cozumel is the answer. There are several hotels that caters specifcally to divers and offers dive packages.

There are non-stop flights from Toronto and Newark to Grand Cayman. Since July is the off-season hotel rooms should not be too expensive. If you are not too demanding about your accommodations, dive resorts such as Turtles Nest Inn or Cobalt Coast Resort are relatively inexpensive and good places to stay.

Of all the islands I have been to, Grand Cayman has the best scuba and snorkelling. If you stay somewhere inexpensive eg the hotels mentioned above, or Harbour View apartments etc, then it can help with the budget. Eating/drinking however is still expensive no matter where you stay.

If you can get to Curacao then you can take a short flight over to Bonaire, its about 25mins. Of course this adds to the cost and journey time. The whole island is geared up for scuba and there is a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets.

United has a nonstop flight on Saturdays to Belize. Excellent diving and my understanding is much cheaper than Grand Cayman.

Cozumel would be another option.
