Seeking Expertise for Central America/Caribbean 2.5 Week Trip

Jump to last reply

I am a single male traveler with some experience in the Caribbean and Central America and decent but rusty Spanish. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options and my independent research has proved only partially helpful. With time fast approaching for my departure, I would really appreciate any help you can give.

My hope is to find a location for two and a half weeks (May – June) that has the following qualifications.

• Reasonable flight cost from the US ($600 or less) – flying into a different city and getting there by bus is fine
• Ability to cook my own food or buy meals for a low price ($4 and less)
• Room by myself
• Low priced hostel/apartment/hotel ($50 or less per night) – ideally renting an apartment
• Surfing, scuba diving and/or beachfront are all nice but not absolute necessities

I want to spend this trip writing, reading and running or at least I think I do, I have been putting off writing for a long time so I want writing to be a big part of this trip. The location that comes to mind is an east coast beach town in Costa Rica I have been to in the past but I would prefer not to return there. Other locations that seem to have potential are Bay Islands – Honduras, Corn Islands – Nicaragua, Turks and Caicos as well as Bocas del Toro – Panama.

Thanks for any recommendations, whether it be as specific as a great hostel/apartment rental or just an opinion on a location.
