Anyone been to both? We're trying to decide between them. I'm looking for peace, quiet, relaxation - don't care about water sports, beach parties, volleyball. Want to enjoy the warm air, read a book, and eat great food. Royal Hideaway seems to have the edge for me - any comments ?

I have been a regular on this board for 3 years, and I have yet to see one negative comment about the RH.
Playa del Carmen is one of my favorite destinations, and the beach there is absolutely breathtaking.
Nightlife is varied, safe and fun, and there is a lot to do in the area.
You've already made the right choice - go for it
I agree with Diana. I have never heard any negativity on RH. I have not been there, to this resort, I have been to Sandals. If I had to make the choice, I would choose RH without a doubt. I think it has what you are describe.
I probably have posted numerous recommendations about the RH if you haven't already read them. I went there last October with my husband for our 1 year anniversary and would go back in a heartbeat. Everything there was 5 star, from the accommodations, to the food/service, grounds, beach, etc. Next time I would opt for the ocean view rooms because the water view is absolutely spectacular, varying bands of blues and greens. I have pictures that I could email you. And as far as the value you cannot beat it. Being that it is Mexico it is not as costly but then again you are on the Caribbean coast so you get the best of both worlds. Plus they offer day excursions to say Cozumel, Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, etc. You have so many options or you can just decide to stay and relax at this beautiful resort. I would go back in a heartbeat. I have never been to Sandals Negril, but for my honeymoon I went to the Sandals Halcyon and the two don't even compare. (as far as the resorts go). The RH does not feel like a chain and you forget that you're staying at an AI! Good luck.
I was at RH this past Feb. Altho I have been to other all-inclusives, I must say that this place has them all beat. What a class operation!! There are no silly wristbands or other IDs to wear, the food and restaurants are outstanding, the staff couldn't be nicer and the place overall is simply magnificent. There is plenty of space on the beach to sit, with canvas cabanas for shade set up for you by a staff member. There is no doubt - Royal Hideaway is the place to go. The only thing against it is there is not much to do in the evening - but you can go into town.
