I have never rented a car abroad, as I always hear horror stories, even about American franchises, of routine scams. However, my husband and I want to explore Martinique for a week and this would be difficult without a car. Can anyone recommend a trustworthy car rental or strategies in Fort-de-France? I'm also going to check with my various credit card companies to see what protection they offer. Thanks.

I rented in Martinique and Guadeloupe plus a multitude of other Caribbean islands, most recently Tobago a month back. Picked up the car from Fort de France after arriving on the catamaran service from Guadeloupe and dropped it off at the airport on the way back. Think it was Europcar and was either a Renault Clio or Peugeot of some sort with manual gears. If you can only drive an automatic make sure thats what you book. Check the car is ok ie the tyres inc the spare are ok, headlights and windscreen wipers work etc and make sure any damage already on the car is recorded.
Roads are the best that I've encountered in the Caribbean, since being part of France the standard of living is quite high for the area. Road signs are very good too, same as if you were in France. I always take CDW and have personal accident insurance as part of my travel insurance. Driving in St Pierre is interesting, with narrow roads and deep gutters.
