Recommend a Bermuda hotel for 2 adults/2 children?
We are considering a June trip to Bermuda with our two children, ages 11 and 7. We are not fussy, hoity toity hotel people; rather we prefer clean, comfortable and homey (not homely, mind you!). Any recommendations on a place to stay? Any other Caribbean island you'd recommend for us to consider? We have one adult diver, and all 4 of us snorkel. We are active - hiking, horseback riding, etc. Thank you so much!

I wouldn't say that Bermuda is a hiking type of island. As far as hoity toity, keep in mind that Bermuda is very British and tea is served in the afternoon. I recommend St. John as a better fit if hiking is what you want to do or perhaps Tortola in BVI (more laid back than Bermuda). In St. John there is a very nice campground, Maho Bay Camps, that your children would love and won't break the bank. It's like a treehouse. That is one of 4 camp style accomodations on St. John:

Another alternative for St. John would be to rent a villa. That way you have more than just a bedroom and have a kitchen for snacks and meals if you want:

I am a great fan of Bermuda and I love to hike there. They have marvelous hiking on the Bermuda Railroad trail. If you are going in June it will be fairly busy, the weather will be great. For hotel choice I would suggest Surfside. It is oceanfront, has an on site restaurant, easy access to public transportation and a nice beach and pool. Many rooms have kitchens, which is almost a necessity with kids. An alternative would be Greenbank.
Blue Water Divers has been in business for years. They have an excellent safety record and offer trips at wreck sites which are appropriate for snorklers and divers. The snorkeling at Church Bay, about a mile from Surfside on South Road is excellent.

I have used a service run out of Canada the website of which I cannot put my fingers on right now, but I think it is www.bermudaaccomodations.com Try google for bermuda house rentals. Fiona and Mary are the folks who operate the service and I had good luck with it. Very inexpensive alternative. All that said St. John is great, too. For Bermuda, also check out Elbow Beach Hotel. It's a great place for kids with lots to do. However, with any place in Bermuda, I would call the hotel directly to check on the damage from last fall's hurricane. I believe Elbow Beach had some damage, so you'll want to make sure that renovations are complete by June. June is a wonderful time to go to Bermuda. Great weather!

My 16y/o and I stayed at the Fairmont Southhampton princess last June. We loved the beach. The pool was small but never very crowded. Dinner at the golf course was great. We upgraded to the gold status. A private concierge on the floor. Free breakfast and afternoon tea which was really heavy appetizers. Free internet access. Soft drinks free and available around the clock. It was worth the extra expense. We'd go back again.

Bermuda is so beautiful and unique!
It has been several years since I have been there, however, I stayed at Grotto Bay Beach Hotel twice. The hotel was family friendly when I was there, with crystal caves and a shallow fish feeding pond on the property as well as a small beach and a beautiful pool. They had karaoke at their outside lounge in the evenings. It is on the busline and there is a moped rental next to the hotel. Tennis courts and a fishing pier.
Not sure if they had hurricane damage - good to check first! Sunrise views are great and the hotel is close to the airport and St. George.
Check out Church bay and Tobacco bay for snorkeling. So much to do and see you can spend a lot of time just siteseeing! Try it you'll like it!!

Give the old Sonesta now a Wyndahm a try it's set to open in mid June. Was badly damaged during the last storm but when it re-opens it'll have a water park w/4 different pools, wave action/splash/slides and the like. The rates appear to be resonable.

My husband and I were in Bermuda in October of 2003 and really loved it. We stayed at an all in clusive (breakfast and dinner) called the Pompano Beach. It was lovely with a beach that you can walk out 100 yards before it is deep. They drive you to the bus and the boat transportaion so you can get around the island. I love Bermuda it is gorgeous and the people are quite friendly. Pompan has excellent service and good food.

Bermuda might be very British and tea (with cakes) are taken in the afternoon but this doesn't make it hoity-toity. I took my daughter (aged 10) there and stayed at the Ariel Sands in a cottage, she loved it especially playing with the other children and feeding the fish in the seawater pool. It's a very beautiful island.

A couple thoughts come to mind. In Bermuda it's high season now, and airfares are always costly. Bermuda is beautiful, but you cannot rent a car, and thus would be dependant on public transportation or motor scootors (2 up max) Elbow Beach is a nice, family oriented hotel there. St. John sounds like a great suggestion for your family. There's tons of snorkling & hiking & the National Park offers many educational and cool programs too. Maho Bay Camps www.maho.org is a great thought too. Their eco-friendly "tents" are actually very nice structures with solar powered lighting & mini-kitchens. They have communal dining as well which could be a great way to meet other families while there too. All the activities you mentioned are available on St. John. I think this would be a great trip, and a good value as it's low season in STJ now, but still beautiful. We'll be there for 2 weeks at the end of May. Trish
