Tom Beach Hotel on Baie de St. Jean is reasonable. Most of the rooms are not ocean view, as the hotel is perpendicular to the beach, but the hotel restaurant is beach front.
Believe it or not, the very smallest room at Eden Rock, also on St. Jean, is around $300 a night, which is reasonable by St. Barth's standards. And hey, it's Eden Rock!
There's also a website called www.cheapcaribbean.com that offers a few places on St. Barths that you might want to check out. They offer both villas and hotels that should have some vacancy during the off-season.
Village St Jean is very nice. We stayed there about a year and a half ago and the onlly thing we didn't like was being on top of the hill. Not easy to walk to anything but the beach.
We were upgraded to a suite with a jet tub and a beautiful view. We went off season so it was downright cheap, but I think even on season it would be a very good bargain for what you get.
Also, if you have not already done so, eat at the restaurant there, it was very good!
Try doing a search on www.sbhonline.com. Many of the posters have stayed at VSJ and there are detailed room descriptions etc.
My wife and I are returning to Village St. Jean this May. You can rent a deluxe terrace cottage with a view for $1750.00 for 7 nights, and that includes the rental of a Suzuki Samuri for the whole period. A real bargain. Their website is www.villagestjean.com look for the "summer specials".
Village St. Jean is nice but it's a hotel and the area has great views but is a little too loud, especially in high season. For the same price check this place stbartsvilla.com on Flamands Beach, perhaps the Islands finest one for swimmming. $1700 weekly off season.
Caribcouple: I checked out the Flamands Blue Villa website that you mention and it does look great. Have you stayed there or personally seen it? Do you know any more details about it? I may sound foolish but staying in a hotel provides at least some sense of security -- that you'll get what you paid for, etc. I've never rented a villa and am somewhat nervous about it.
Thanks for any more info you can provide.
