Questions regarding taxi service in Provo, Turks and Caicos

Hey Fodorites,

We are heading to Provo for the second time July 1. Last time I went, I was so amazed by Grace Bay beach that we hardly left the area! We of course went to Ports of Call and to a couple of the markets, but this time I would love to explore the other beaches.

We contemplated renting a car, and we still might. If we decide not to rent a car, will the taxi service take us to Malcom's Road for example? I know the road to this beach is pretty bad.

What other beaches would you recommend? Do the taxis go there?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Denise

To the best of my knowledge - none of the taxis will take out out to the end of Malcom Roads - it is just too hard on their vehicles. I am sure taxis would take you to most other areas. There is a nice "wild" beach at Long Bay - good shelling and walking. Another beach at Sapodilla Bay. The photo ops at the Chalk Sound are lovely. There is also a nice beach by Smith's Reef near the marina at Turtle Cove. However taxis are expensive - so if you want to do some serious exploring - rent a car. It does occur to me that you might be able to make a deal with a cab driver for a day but it would still probably be a lot more expensive than renting a car.

Thanks, JMM!!!

Yes, I think renting a car is the way to go. Do you think we need a jeep for those roads?

Thanks,

Denise

The roads in Provo are not very good - (lots of erosion along the sides of roads and many are not paved and plenty of potholes) but we have usually managed with a regular car. The one exception to this is - if you plan to go out to the end of Malcom Roads (beautifil wild beach and a series of lovely little coves (you have to walk to the coves)) For Malcom roads, you really do need some sort of 4 wheel drive vehicle. We have done Malcom Roads in a regular car and it is QUITE challenging. Remember this is a British colony - drive on the LEFT.
Have a lovely vacation.

hi love2,
i suggest you go with the 4-wheel jeep for Malcolm Rd. on provo last nov. and we got part way out there only to find a car (attn: JMM) stuck and unable to go up or down the road. as such we didn't get to go to the beach. instead used my cell to call their rental co. for assist. the road to long bay beach is pretty rough too. enjoy your trip on my birthday!!!

Thanks so much, JMM and virginia for your replies.

I think we decided to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle for 3 days. We would prefer to rent for only two, but I heard 3 days was the minimum. Do you know if this is true, or if we could rent for two?

Thanks again for your help!!!

Denise

The last time we were there, we only rented a vehicle for 2 days but that was about 2 years ago - so things may have changed.
