I am thinking about going to Antigua for a few days on our Carribean trip (We'll probably be going to St. Kitts then going to Antigua). We are doing this because St. Kitt is supposed to be great but Antigua is supposed to have sandy white beaches which I love! I am looking for a hotel with clean maintained rooms with clear water beaches that are calm and shallow. Also which hotels are safer? Any recommendations? Also, is it better to rent a car, or are taxis readily availabe on the islands, and are the taxis reasonable?

Trip Ideas
Great choices! We have only spent a day on St. Kitts. It's nice because its not very developed or touristy. The beaches we encountered were nice, but not the type of beach you think of when thinking of the Carib. We went to Banana Beach which wasn't white sand, but had a beautiful view of Nevis.
Antigua is one of our favorite islands. We've had two day trips there, spent 10 days there 2 years ago and are going back for a month this summer. You can find busy beaches or completely deserted beaches and they are all fabulous. Definitely check out Valley Church beach, Ffreyes beach and Long Beach. Long beach is one of my favorites and is pretty shallow and absolutely beautiful. There are some hotels there but I haven't personally stayed in any of them. We usually rent a house.
The great thing about Antigua is its a small island so its easy to get around to other beaches. Anything on the Caribbean side will be calm. Atlantic side has more waves.
If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I can and I can recommend a fabulous agent if you decide to rent a house instead. She works with all budget levels (which is hard to find) and is really great!
JayBah, We're planning to visit Antigua in Feb - would love to have your agent referral to rent a house, we (3 couples) always try to rent houses/villas instead of the hotel/resort. Would appreciate your comments on areas - found a villa at Hillside at Cobbs Cross, but know nothing of the area. We've been lucky in the past with renting a villa on St. Maarten, would prefer references this trip. Thanks for your time.
