Punta Cana Activities and Food

I am going to Punta Cana in March with my boyfriend and his family. We are staying at an AI for the week we are there, however would like to get out and explore a bit. We were looking at possibly renting a jeep and driving out somewhere. We also were interested in checking out some restaurants nearby for a more locals touch and get an idea of the culture. I know Punta Cana is surrounded by all inclusive resorts but there must still be some original DR flare somewhere nearby. Any reccomendations would be appreciated on both activities in the area/day trips/ food. Thanks in advance!
