Puerto Rico vs, Jamaica

Which island is better for a 30-something married couple? We're looking for beautiful beaches, nice rooms, and good food. Are currently contemplating Wyndham El San Juan and perhaps trying an AI in Negril (Couples or Grand Lido?)
How do PR and Jamaica--and these specfic locations--compare?
I've never been to either, and would appreciate any insight. Thank you!

The beach at Negril is a hundred times better than the beaches near San Juan, PR. I prefer the smaller hotels of Negril to All Inclusives, as their stretch of beach is usually less crowded that the beach in front of the AIs. And, if you are not happy with the food at an AI, you are stuck.

The beaches in PR close to San Juan are o.k I happen to like PR for it has more culture, a variety of restaurants, the rain forrest, and it also part of the U.S. There are not any vendors trying to sell you beads every time you turn around. There are some nice beaches but not close to the San Juan area. If beaches are a priority I suppose I would go with Jamaica. Keep in mind PR does not have any AI's.

Big factor too is if youwant the All-inclusive option or not.

Negril is a great area - actually, the best part of Jamaica. The beaches thee, in my opinion, are nicer then in PR, tons to see and do off the resorts and Jamaica jsut has such an alive beat to it - maybe its the music but we love it there. Been to GL and highly recommend it - small enough that you have that intimate feel but not dead in atmsohere, first class food and service and beautiful rooms.

PR - so much culture; great for touring

I have been to Ocho Rios. Found evening adventure to be too adventurous for us. Was a bit frightened when we went to eat outside of our hotel on some evenings. A lot of yelling from the balconies or across the street if we like to "party" from locals. We ventured out a lot on our own and found it to be a little scary. Trying to make sure the cab a marked cab, etc.

But still had a fun experience despite that.

I've felt like that in MoBay, emma.

Negril has a different feel...more relaxed, much more comfortable interaction between locals and tourists (and all the in-betweens, ex-pats etc). Folks will still ask you to buy stuff but I don't find them very aggressive and we are always comfortable hanging out at bars and live music places and such.

We have been to both Jamaica and Puerto Rico. In Jamaica, we stayed near Montego Bay (Ritz), but drove to Negril (yes, drove) for some fun. In Puerto Rico, we stayed at the Hilton, which is near the Wyndham but a little closer to Old San Juan. We had a great time in both places.

Although the beaches were better in Jamaica, I would choose Puerto Rico over Jamaica. We like to get out and explore, and we simply did not feel safe doing so in Jamaica. We were strongly advised not to drive a rental car for safety reasons, but chose to do so anyway. While we had no real trouble during our drives, we were approached several times to buy drugs and to get "repairs" made to our car (which didn't actually have any problems). Beggars in Jamaica are persistent, often sticking their hands into open windows to prevent you from driving away!

No such problems in PR. Also, there is more to do in PR - Spanish forts, old town, better restaurants, etc.

Having said all that, if you are considering an AI, your idea of fun might be simply hanging out at your beach front hotel, eating lots of food and drinking tropical drinks all day (sounds good to me, come to think of it!). If that is the case, Jamaica might be a better choice for you.

Have fun,
Dave
