Puerto Rico Rio Mar Resort

If anyone have something to say about
6000 Rio Mar Boulevard
Rio Grande, Puerto Rico 00745-6100
Please, do!

I am planning week after Thanksgiving.
Tickets are fairly well priced and I hope to just relax and do nothing.

Thanks

I have stayed at the Rio Mar for the past 3 years (2005, 2006 and last time was 08/2007) and I love it. I will be there next week for five days but Gran Melia this time around. The staff is very nice the breakfast was great and it has an awesome beach. I don't think you will regret it after your second day there you will feel that your home. The only thing I did not like this last time was the parking. You have to go to hotel entrance to get ticket validated before you can go out. Hope this helps and have a great time.

Thanks so much! I had just finished booking! I am not going to have a car - we planning on taking Rainforest trip and chill by the water.
Any suggestions maybe 'must do'?

I honestly suggest everyone to rent a car. The cost from the airport to the hotel per person IF am not mistaken is about $50.00 per person, (one of my stays there one of our friends arrived really late and did not want for us to pick them up and that's how much they paid)make sure you check that out. The nightly parking is about $16.00 per night and you can get really good deals on car rentals from either priceline or hotwire. As mentioned I will be there between 11/13-17 and was able to get a mid size car for 84.00 for the entire stay, you do the math and see. They have a kayak night trip out of Fajardo to do the bio-bay which has being highly recommended on my last trip I had it scheduled we had to cancel due to weather, this time is only two of us going so I think I will skip it, but everyone I've spoken too loves it. Camuy caves this time of the year is not the best but one day you should try to make it there and I know this one is far too but if you get a chance try and make a day trip to Arecibo Observatory largest telescope in the world I don't know your intrests but it is neat to see, you said you want to relax and this place is good for just that it's one of my favorite places to stay even though it's kind of far from everything else, I will tell you this again try and get a car so you could at least go to Old San Juan. Almost forgot if you do get a car once you get out of the hotel and into the main road make a left and drive for about 5-8 minutes on the left hand side (So sorry can't remember the name of the place BUT you are leaving after I come back so I can get back with you with the name) here on the weekends they have about 20-30 kiosks selling food and drinks and the beach is right behind it they don't look like much but they do sell alot of good (bad for our bodies) food. take care and hope this helps let me know if you want the name of this place too.

Previous poster is talking about Luqillo Beach and their kiosks of authentic, wonderful P.R. cuisine. I recommend La Parilla - excellent food and service! Go enjoy the beaches there, too! Rio Mar is my favorite hotel in P.R. Great Beach, fun casino, many restaurant choices, very close to EL Junque for hiking. Rooms are very lovely and spacious. Be sure to do BIO BAY out of Fajardo in the evening - you won't regret it!

OMG! I am so excited! And you did it! I was kind of scared because I found this place by elimination.
Never planned to go there.
Thanks

El junque is well worth, but drive yourself! If you book it through the hotels, they way overcharge you - there actually is NO CHARGE to go to El Junque - just grab some maps and go!! Also, there is a great kiosk halfway up there that has some great homemade tacos and smoothies!

I have been to El Yunquw (rainforest) several times. The first time we went on our own and enjoyed hiking around. Since then I have gone with a friend who lives in San Juan and knows El Yunque like the back of his hand. It makes the visits so much better when you have a guide who explains everything you're seeing.

If you go with a guide, be careful what you're paying for ... we have come up behind guide-led groups that were being fed mis-information ... such as pointing out supposed grapefruit trees ... which most certainly do not grow up in El Yunque!

I agree with the previous posts about renting a car and doing stuff on your own. It's really not difficult, especially if you're staying at Rio Mar ... The main road up into the rain forest (Road 191) is just across Route 3 from the Rio Mar Resort.

Rent a car, drive yourself. You'll be fine. Take a look at our rain forest primer for do-it-yourself information including driving directions, trail descriptions and trail map -- http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/el...tional-forest/

Hope this helps!

Drinking from the tap is not an issue in Puerto Rico ... and to be honest, it's not that much of an issue in much of Mexico anymore either.

Hi Group Traveler,

Yes, rent a car,it is well worth it and will allow you the freedom to move around on your own! As the previous posters said, you can do El Yunque on your own very easily. I recommend stopping at El Portal Visitor's Center which is located at the entrance to the rainforest. It costs $3 per person and is a great introduction to all the rainforest offers. You can also pick up trail maps there. At the Palo Colorado Recreation area there are park rangers that offer tours for about $5.00. These are the guys you want to talk to, they KNOW the rainforest and are alot of fun.
The Luquillo Kioskos is an excellent choice for dining options, in fact, the kioskos are going through a change and many new places are popping up that offer great food at very affordable prices. My favorites are:

#2 La Parrilla- excellent fish and local specialties.
#9 Conga's- Great mofongo and shrimp. Excellent sushi on Saturday nights.
#12 El Jefe Burger Shack- Freshly ground chuck steak burgers and great fish and chips!
#20 Lighthouse- Freshly made local specialties.
#38 Ceviche Hut- Great Peruvian food, the fish ceviche is awesome.

There are many other great ones, these are just my fave, and besides the food, drink prices are considerably lower than they will be at the hotel... Hope this helps and have a great time in our island paradise!

You can rent a car through an online booking engine (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz) or from the car-rental company's own Web site. I suggest checking prices on a site like Expedia first and then double-checking to see that you can't do better on the car-rental company's web site. Stick with a major company. Renting by the week will usually save you some money.

I just got back Monday night we rented a car for five days (11/13 - 11/17) through Hotwire and got it for $83.00 total. I usually make bids on priceline but this time found hotwire to have better rates. Hope this helps, good luck and am glad your considering the rental car you will not regret it.
