Puerto Rico last minute weekend getaway, where to stay? Car?
Grabbed a last minute flight for next weekend into sju, 3 nights, trying to figure where hubby and i should stay. Have only visited a couple other times while on a cruise, did the fort and walked around port area..not really impressed but always wanted to give PR a chance and see what else it has to offer..never been to a beach or outskirts of San Juan. We will likely stay at a beach resort....what areas are best for beaches and reasonable proximity to airport? Is there a beach area/town that has it's own dining/shopping without going back to San Juan? Is a car recommended? ( we do like to drive and explore on our own if it's generally safe....is it?). I would love to hear about places that others enjoy here...
Thanks for any info as I do not have time to do the proper research on this short notice...

Isla Verde is known to have best beach in the San Juan area and is very close to the airport but Condado has more restaurants within walking distance to hotels and is closer to Old San Juan. However, doesn't sound like proximity to Old San Juan is that important to you. When we were planning our trip we were told if the nicer beach is important go to Isla Verde but if being in walking distance to restaurants and other activities is important ( with decent enough beach) then go with Condado.

I'd agree with genio67 regarding the differences between Condado and Isla Verde. There are some restaurants you can walk to in Isla Verde, but the Condado area is more pleasant to walk through and does have more shops/restaurants. In Isls Verde I would look at El San Juan Hotel, Ritz Carlton and Intercontinental. In Condado, I would go with the Renaissance or the Marriott. There is also the Condado Plaza but it is lacking a proper beach.

Hi, I thought I would join in the discussion. I just wanted to say that I am so confused about Puerto Rico. I want to try it out because I know Spanish fairly well and it is such an easy and short flight from Orlando. (We will be in Orlando for business). The deal is, there are so many mixed reviews about people loving PR and people hating it. I hear that it is a grimy city (San Juan) and the beaches are nothing great. Then, other people say it's awesome. Is there anyone that can give me input on these questions: Is PR safe? Are the beaches decent? Are there choices in the deluxe beach regions to take long hiking trips without a tour? ANy help would be appreciated. I originally wanted to go to Turks and Caicos, but I can't justify spending that much money. Thank you,
